Alice (Cook) Brook passed away at Compass Assisted Living in Boston on Friday evening, June 5, 2020. The beloved wife of the late Ralph G. Brook, she was 91 years old.
Alice was born in Cambridge, MA. She was the daughter of the late Walter and Mary Cook. She was raised and educated in Allston and Belmont. After high school Alice worked at a bank in Boston. During the summer months Alice and her girlfriends would spend many weekends in Maine. It was on one of those weekend trips that she would meet her future husband Ralph, who was on leave from the Navy and on vacation with his family, in Wells Maine. Ralph proposed to Alice at the Nubble Lighthouse in Maine and they married on April 27, 1952. Maine would always hold a special place in their hearts. Alice, Ralph and their children would spend their summers vacationing in Maine for many years. Alice always loved the ocean and shoreline.
Alice and Ralph moved to Burlington in the mid 1950’s where they would raise their four children. They settled on Hilltop Drive and then moved to Peach Orchard Road. Alice worked as a Secretary to Principle Connors at Marshall Simonds Middle School for many years. With her outgoing personality, it was the perfect job for Alice, and it was also right up the street from her home on Peach Orchard Road. During their retirement years Alice and Ralph would spend their winters in Punta Gorda in Florida. They loved their time in Florida and enjoyed time spent with friends old and new. Alice and Ralph had a wonderful marriage and were great role models for their children. They were loving and supporting parents and grandparents who gave their children unconditional love and support.
Alice was an active and independent woman. She served as a town meeting member in Burlington for many years. After retirement, she became a longtime member of the Burlington Senior Center. This played a very important part in her life after Ralph passed away in 2003. She volunteered in the office and later participated in the exercise programs and bus trips to stage shows and the Boston Pops. She also took many group trips with the seniors to such destinations as Alaska, Italy and Hawaii. Alice loved to keep busy. A typical day would start with exercise at the center, shopping, and also keeping herself current by reading the Boston Globe. She also enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren in South Boston. Alice was a member of the Red Hats and would enjoy dressing up for lunch with the ladies. She will be remembered for her outgoing personality, her zest for life and her love of family.
