Obituary of William Hawthorne

William T. Hawthorne, a man who devoted his life to his family, passed away at his home in Woburn on Wednesday morning, March 19, 2008. He was 77 years old. Bill was born in St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton, the son of the late Thomas and Jolan Hawthorne. He grew up in Somerville and was a graduate of Somerville High School. He furthered his education by going to night school at a number of universities including; Wentworth and M.I.T. He loved history. He read extensively on military history. He had been a resident of Woburn for 55 years. Bill worked as a mechanic, machinist, and then a toolmaker. He had worked at United Car Fastener, which became T.R.W. for 27 years. He thought of himself as a homebody. He was very happy working around his home and taking care of his family. Bill’s mechanical skill meant that he could fix almost anything. Bill always placed his family’s happiness first. He was a devoted husband and father, who worked hard to be a good provider for them. He very much enjoyed being a part of his granddaughter’s and great grandson’s lives. He cherished the time spent playing basketball with his great grandson, Taurean. And as Taurean went on to play High School sports, Bill was always in the stands supporting his efforts. He will be lovingly remembered. Bill was the husband of Glenna D. (Gingras) Hawthorne of Woburn. He was the loving father of Nancy & her husband Julius Crawford of Cambridge He was the proud grandfather of Michelle Crawford-Diop & her husband Ale B. Diop of Cambridge and great grandfather of Taurean Crawford of Cambridge. A memorial service will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Saturday, March 22, at 2:30 p.m.. A memorial visitation will be held prior to the service from 1-2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Bill’s name may be made to Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack St., Lawrence, MA 01843.
