Obituary of Mary Cerra

Mary Concetta Cerra, passed away after a brief illness at the Wingate at Reading Nursing Center on Sunday evening, April 6, 2008. She was 87 years old. Mary was born in Somerville, the daughter of Italian immigrants, the late Antonio and Francesca (Romano) Cerra. She grew up and was educated in Boston. She had made her home in Reading for 36 years and Wakefield for 20 years. She worked at Transitron in Wakefield starting as an Assembler and worked her way to become the first woman Quality Control Supervisor for the company. If you were to ask Mary what her occupation was, she would say a homemaker and mother because that was important to her. Mary was a great hostess and loved to entertain. As a true cook and baker some of her favorites were New York Cheesecake, Fruitcake, Italian Cookies, and all of the Traditional Italian Dishes. You were very fortunate to be seated at Mary’s dinner table. She loved music and enjoyed ballroom dancing and bowling with her friends. She loved being a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and all of the wonderful memories and experiences that come with such a large family. Mary was the beloved mother of Jean & her husband Dan Berardi of Burlington, Joyce De Fazio of Beverly, Carol Kalil of Salem, NH and Diane Colantuoni of Bedford. She is the sister of Salvatore “Sam” Cerra of Chelsea, Philip Cerra of Woburn, and the late Joseph, Frank & Vincent Cerra. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Mary is the former wife of the late Domenic Scavongelli, Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Thursday, April 10 at 11 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret’s Church, 111 Winn St., Burlington at 12 Noon. Visiting hours Wednesday 4-8 p.m. Interment in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Boston. Memorial donations in Mary’s name may be made to St. Jude Children’s’ Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
