Obituary of Bernard Baker
Bernard “Bernie” W. Baker, Sr. a retired Postal Worker, passed away at his daughter Stefanie’s home in Burlington on his 68th birthday, December 7, 2008.
Bernie was born in Boston, the son of the late James and Mary Baker. He was raised and educated in the West End of Boston. Bernie was a Veteran of the United States Navy. He had resided in Somerville for the past 45 years. He worked for the United States Post Office for over 30 years as a letter carrier in Arlington and clerk in Chelsea. He also co-owned a ceramics studio in Magoon Square in Somerville, with his late wife Leona. He had worked part-time for the Dello Russo Funeral Home in Medford for 20 years. Bernie led a full and active life. He enjoyed saltwater fishing and golfing. He enjoyed vacationing in Aruba. He was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed going to Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun resorts. He will be remembered for his outgoing personality and great sense of humor.
Bernie was the beloved husband of the late Leona (Giannelli). He was the loving father of Stefanie Merrill & her husband Steven of Burlington, Pamela Chaves & her husband Danny of Somerville, Dean Baker & his wife Rita of Somerville, Bernard W. Baker, Jr. & his wife Lisa of Reading. He was the brother of James Baker & the late John Baker. He was the proud grandfather of Cailyn, Caleigh, Cameron, & Christopher Merrill, Jillian Chaves, Deano, Julia, Jessica & Haley Baker.
A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Clement Church, 70 Warner St., Medford, on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 10 a.m. Memorials in Bernie’s name may be made to Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack St., Building 9, Lawrence, MA 01843.
