Obituary of Daniel Olsten
Daniel H. Olsten, loving father, uncle, and friend, passed away with his family by his side after a year long battle with cancer on Friday morning, April 12, 2013. He was 49 years old. Dan was born in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. He lived in Ontario until the age of 11 when his family moved to Green Hill, Nova Scotia. He attended West Pictou District High School, where he met the love of his life, Vivian James, a new student from the United States. After attending Acadia University, they married and settled in Billerica, Massachusetts, to start their life together. Dan continued his education at Boston University where he received his Masters Degree in Business Administration.
Dan found his calling in the Healthcare industry. He began with the position of Specialty Administrator of Internal Medicine at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates in Newton. He progressed to the Chief Delivery System Officer at Martin’s Point Healthcare in Portland, Maine. Two years ago he took the leap and started Olsten Consulting. He was well respected and attracted several clients including Children’s Hospital and Pinacle Rehabilitation Network. An accomplished executive, he touched many lives through his work.
Dan had a lifetime of experiences in his 49 years. He was extremely self-motivated and was always on the move. He was a very proud and supportive father, enjoying his daughter Carly’s dancing and his son Shawn’s hockey games. He travelled all over the state, country and world following Shawn as he played on the Boston Golden Eagles hockey team. His family always came first. His home was his castle and he was always working to improve the house inside and out. He loved music and playing the guitar. His favorite vacation destinations included Aruba and White Point Beach in Nova Scotia with his family and close friends. He was a big Red Sox fan and always relished a competitive game of volleyball. Dan embraced life, worked hard, and loved his family and friends immensely.
Dan was the loving husband of 27 years to Vivian (James) Olsten. He was the proud father of Shawn of Dover, NH and Carly of Billerica. He was the son of Suzanne & James Olsten of Vancouver Island, Canada and the late Wolfgang Krause. He was the brother of Cindygail Thomson & her husband Patrick of Vancouver, Canada, Wayne & his wife Nikkie and Chris & Anne all of Vancouver Island, Canada. He was the son-in-law of Laura James of Burlington and the late Alexander James and brother-in-law of Jeffrey & Donna James of Woburn and Angela & Bryan Anderson of Burlington and a loving uncle to his nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (exit 34 off Rt. 128/95, Woburn side) on Monday, April 15 from 4-8 p.m. Services will be held in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Canada on Friday, April 19. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Daniel’s name may be made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Jimmy Fund, P.O.
