Obituary of Daniel V. Murphy
Daniel V. Murphy of Wilmington, formerly of Woburn and Somerville, passed away on Monday, June 5, 2023, he was 83 years old. Born in Somerville to Irish immigrants, John and Helen Murphy. Dan was the beloved husband of the late Julie (Monagle). He was the proud and loving father of Valerie Murphy of Marina Bay, Juliann Cadogan & her husband James of Wilmington, Daniel Murphy & his wife Kathleen of Foxboro, and Matthew Murphy & his wife Elizabeth of Scituate. He was the devoted Papa to Caileen and Bridget Cadogan of South Boston, Maeve Cadogan of Wilmington, Annie, Molly, & Declan Murphy of Foxboro, and Curran, Charlie, & Nora Murphy of Scituate. His siblings predeceased him; John Murphy, Mary McPherson, Eileen Piccola, and Maureen Walsh. Also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews.
Dan was a graduate of Somerville High School and worked for 30-plus years at the MBTA. He enjoyed his work and the camaraderie he shared with his co-workers, many of whom he worked with for decades.
Dan married his wife Julie (Monagle) in 1962, settling in Woburn, where they raised their four children. Working nights gave him flexibility and the opportunity to be more involved in his children's lives and activities. Dan attended all his children’s activities and served on the Board of Directors of Woburn Youth Hockey. He was a proud founding member of the Woburn Irish American Club where he served on the Board of Directors for many years, participating in all the social and charity events offered. He was a member for life of the Somerville Elks, as well. Dan never refused an invitation to golf with family or friends. He was an avid golfer and belonged to the Thompson Country Club in North Reading.
Dan was a man devoted to his family. He and his wife Julie shared 54 wonderful years of marriage. They shared a love of traveling and enjoyed many trips together, with Ireland, Alaska, Bermuda, and Hawaii being some of their favorite experiences. After they retired, they spent winters in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea with friends from Charlestown, South Boston and Somerville who did the same. Dan was a supportive and loving father and father-in-law to his children and their spouses. He encouraged and supported them to make the most of their opportunities. Sunday dinners were special family time and often followed by a good game of Dominos. He was so proud of his children's accomplishments and successes. Dan was always there to give thoughtful advice, a helping hand, or help watch over his grandchildren. He had a list on his refrigerator filled with requests from all his family that he happily worked on. The role cherished most in his later years was being "Papa" to his nine grandchildren. He loved making them smile and laugh, was their biggest cheerleader, and reveled in giving them special attention and gifts that only grandparents could share. Dan's Irish wit, kindness, helpfulness, and the love and devotion he showered upon all his family, will be missed by all.
