Obituary of Laurence C. Harrington

Laurence “Larry” C. Harrington a retired Senior Vice President and Senior Relationship Manager for Bank of America passed away after a long battle with cancer.  He was 65 years old.  Larry was one of seven children born to Millie and James Harrington.  He grew up in Burlington and was a graduate of Burlington High School.  His father had a well-known gas and service station in Burlington.  Both Larry’s brothers worked along side their dad.  Larry gave it a try, but after crashing a car through the garage door, it was obvious that he needed to seek another career path.  He went to work as a teller at BayBank in Burlington while he went to the University of Massachusetts in Lowell nights earning his Bachelor’s Degree and MBA.  During his career he had a steady climb up the ladder in the banking industry.  With mergers and transfers he worked for Bank Boston, Fleet Bank, and ended his career at Bank of America.  He was a natural leader.  He worked in many positions during his climb, he was great with coworkers and customers, and was a wonderful goodwill ambassador for the banks.  He was a board member of several Chambers of Commerce including Merrimack Valley and North Shore Chambers.  He was active with Junior Achievement, Middlesex Community College, Salem State, and University of Massachusetts Lowell.  During his decades in the industry, he was that friendly face that mentored others, helped families buy their first homes, cars, and send their children to college.  He helped entrepreneurs and businesses secure funding to expand, create new jobs, and be successful.  He had a strong belief in giving back to the communities.  He was an entertaining presenter and speaker with his “Harrington Humor”.  During his journey he did have some wonderful opportunities and perks.  He was involved in the Salem State speaker series where he met United States Presidents, sports legends, and celebrities. He also worked with Bruin’s legend Bobby Orr on a bank sponsored speaker series. Larry would say the best benefit of his career was meeting a fellow banker, Sandy Ogden, who would become his wife and soulmate. He was well respected by his peers, treated others as he would like to be treated, and truly made a positive difference in the lives of his coworkers and customers.

Larry embraced life and was deeply involved with his family.  He enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Indian Ridge Country Club.  He loved to read. He was an avid runner and on one vacation he ran a 5K, 10K, and half marathon on consecutive days at Disney World.  He loved to travel with his wife and children.  There were trips to Bermuda, Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, and the Caribbean.  He was a huge Disney fan and clocked up over 30 Disney vacations between parks and cruises.  He loved seeing his children’s faces light up walking down Main Street, on the rides, and the shows.  He was just as happy eating his way around Epcot.  He was always impeccably dressed no matter the occasion and jeans hadn’t been part of his wardrobe since childhood. He approached life and his work with excellence and integrity.  He was a wonderful husband and father, a devoted son, and fun and supportive brother and uncle. His greatest joy was his family. He was dedicated to Sandy, Caitlin, and Larry Jr., always so proud of each of them. He leaves a Legacy of caring for others. He will be remembered, be missed, and always hold a special place in the hearts of those he loved.

Larry was the beloved husband of 39 years of Sandra “Sandy” (Ogden) Harrington of Methuen.  He was the loving father of Laurence Harrington, Jr. and Caitlin Harrington both of Methuen.  He was the devoted son of Amelia “Millie” Harrington of Burlington and the late James Harrington. He was the caring and supportive brother of Christine Callahan & her husband Bill of Burlington, James Harrington, Jr. & his wife Lynn of Denmark, ME, Thomas Harrington & his wife Libbie of Watertown, Karen McCarthy & her husband Jim of Ossipee, NH & Summerfield, FL, Donna Costa & her husband Rich of Burlington, and Tracy Mushrow & her husband Ken of Bridgeton, ME.  Son-in-law of the late Rudolph and Helen Ogden.  Brother-in-law of Rudy & Patsy Ogden of Venice, FL and the late John Ogden.  He was also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., Burlington on Sunday, Nov. 26 from 3-6 p.m. Funeral from the Sullivan Funeral Home on Monday, Nov. 27 at 9 a.m. and will conclude with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Margaret Church in St. Veronica Parish, www.stveronicama.org, 111 Winn St., Burlington at 10 a.m.
