Obituary of Raymond Starkey
Raymond J. Starkey, age 79, passed away unexpectedly on January 27th while on a trip to Foxwoods with his devoted son Ray, Jr. He was the beloved husband of Denise (Clark) Starkey, with whom he had shared over 35 wonderful years of marriage.
Born in Chelsea, MA on January 23, 1946, he was a son of the late Orville R. and Sophie J. (Krolikowska) Starkey. Following his education, Ray proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Upon his honorable discharge from the military, he worked as a carpenter for several years before deciding to change career paths. He went and got his certifications to become a respiratory technician in the mid 70’s and worked at Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge until his retirement. It was at this hospital that he met the love of his life, Denise. The two dated for four years before marrying in 1993, and soon after settling down in Burlington.
In his free time, Ray loved to golf, fish, and even flex his creativity from time to time as well. Ray and his son always looked forward to fishing together any chance they could. The best part of their year though was traveling to Cherokee, NC to spend an entire week fishing together. The two made countless memories on their fishing trips and annual birthday trips to Foxwoods. Ray also enjoyed oil painting, a skill that he taught himself—with a little help from Bob Ross. He was also very gifted when it came to building ship models. Anyone who knew Ray would say it just seemed like he was good at everything, but the thing he was unequivocally best at was being a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. To his core, Ray loved his family and was deeply proud of each of them. He was incredibly generous and caring, and would go to any length to make sure his family and loved ones felt protected and loved. This extended to his beloved dogs Audrey and Muffin as well, whom he adored and was just as devoted to. Whether he was on the golf course with his best buddy George, or spending time with his loving family, Ray always was sure to make lasting and loving memories with everyone he cared for most.
Along with his dear wife Denise, Ray is survived by his loving son, Raymond Starkey, Jr. and his wife Rita of Raymond, NH; his beloved granddaughter, Crystal Starkey of Revere; his two great-grandchildren, Lily Festa and Rocco Festa; his sister, Diane Syas of PA; his siblings-in-law Susan Clark and her husband Stephen of Melrose; his niece and nephew Andrew Clark, and Courtney Anderson, as well as many other dear relatives and friends.
Relatives and friends may attend visitation on Sunday, February 2nd from 1 until 3pm. His funeral service will be held in the Funeral Home at 3pm.
As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations in Ray’s honor may be made to either The Wounded Warrior Project, or to the MSPCA.
