Obituary of Denis J. Piper

Denis J. Piper, an entrepreneur, outdoorsman, and cherished friend, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 26, 2025, at the age of 62. Denis was born in Winchester, Massachusetts, to Robert and Doris "Dotty" Piper, and grew up in Burlington, where he enjoyed a joyful and adventurous childhood. He had a special bond with the family horse, Dickie, often riding him while delivering newspapers. Though it wasn’t the most practical mode of transportation and drew a few curious onlookers, Denis cherished those moments and the fun it brought.

Denis graduated from Shawsheen Valley Technical High School in Billerica. During his teenage years, he worked alongside his father and uncle at Piper Pools, where he learned the ins and outs of the pool industry—cleaning, repairs, installations, and sales. His passion for the business grew, and by the 1990s, Denis took the helm of Piper Pools. After 18 successful years, he made the decision to close the business and move on to new ventures.

In the years that followed, Denis worked as the Operations Manager at Sears in Peabody for nearly eight years, all the while pursuing his passion for real estate through his side business, Piper Properties. He bought, remodeled, and sold multi-family rental properties for 15 years. Denis later returned to his roots in the pool industry, managing Surfside Pool in Fitchburg.  Known for his strong work ethic, vast knowledge, and willingness to take business risks, Denis earned the respect of everyone who worked with him.

Outside of work, Denis was an avid lover of the outdoors. Whether hiking, golfing, skiing, or boating, he thrived in nature. He was introduced to boating by his father and spent many years sailing on his beloved boat in Boston Harbor. Denis also had a deep passion for home improvement and spent his last few years lovingly restoring an old home in Fitchburg, often sharing his progress with friends on Facebook.

Denis’s passing is felt deeply by all who knew him. He lived life to the fullest, with a heart full of laughter and a gift for storytelling. He loved a good joke, a clever prank, and always brought a smile to those around him. His spirit, warmth, and sense of humor will be forever remembered, and his memory will continue to bring joy to all who were lucky enough to know him.

Denis was the beloved son of the late Robert and Dotty Piper.  He was the loving brother of Kathleen Smith of Swampscott, Robert A. Piper, Jr. and his wife Pam of Belmont, NH, and the late Johnny Piper.  He was the beloved uncle of Daniel Smith, James Smith, Robert A. Piper, III, Joseph Piper, and James Piper.  He was also survived by many cousins and friends.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visitation on Monday, March 10 from 10:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., Burlington.  A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. at Chestnut Hill Cemetery, 52 Bedford Street, Burlington.  Arrangements by the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, Burlington.
