Obituary of Jan Tian

Jan Tian, 91, of Burlington, MA, passed away on April 22, 2025.

He was born in Jakarta, Indonesia on December 6, 1933, to his father, Tian Tek Sian and his mother, Lim Kway Nio. He married Elsa Gandanegara on March 30,1964.

He attended the University of Indonesia, where he earned a master’s degree in business and finance in 1964. He immigrated to the US in 1966 and has lived 59 years in Massachusetts. He became a United States citizen in 1973.

He was a successful accountant and worked for 30 years with the New England Merchants Bank and Bank of New England. 

He enjoyed tennis, badminton, watching/supporting New England sports teams and had a great interest in cars.  He will be forever remembered for his gentle, quiet way, and his love of traveling whether it be across the United States or around the world with his wife. 

Jan is survived by his wife, Elsa; his brother in-law Alwin Gandanegara and wife, Bobie; his brother Theo Tian (Indonesia), his nephew, William J. Tian and nieces, Deborah (Tian) Verrier and Melissa J. Tian.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Sien Tian and Jet Tian and brothers Will Tian and Okkie Tian.

A wake honoring Jan’s life will be held on Monday, April 28th, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn Street, Burlington, MA 01803.
