Obituary of Daniel "Dan" J. Breton

Daniel “Dan” J. Breton, age 85, passed away peacefully at his home in Woburn on May 6th, 2025.  He was the beloved husband of Cynthia “Cindy” (Scrivens) Breton, with whom he had shared over 45 wonderful years of marriage.

Born in Boston, MA on February 3, 1940, he was one of five children of the late Emile and Alice (Ferland) Breton.  Dan was raised in Somerville, and graduated from Rindge Technical High School.  A short time after his education, Dan enlisted into the United States Army where he proudly served for two years.  Upon his honorable discharge, Dan began working as a telephone repair technician—a position he would hold until his retirement.  He was a dedicated and loyal employee, beginning his career with Western Electric, and following it all the way through when Western was bought by AT&T and Nokia as well.

Dan loved working and being with people, so it was no surprise that following his retirement from the telephone company, he started picking up other jobs.  He worked as a security guard at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for 10 years, and also did maintenance for Winchester Hospital for many years.  Even with his many jobs though, Dan was still a constant and steadfast presence in his wife and son’s lives, and always made time for what was most important.

Dan and his wife Cindy raised their son, Tim, in Woburn in a home filled with love, support, and respect for one another.  No length was too far for Dan to go for his family, and often even his personal hobbies were used to try to help better the life of someone else.  Ever the math whiz, Dan took an interest in the stock market and began growing his portfolio steadily over time.  As the years went on his interest wasn’t really the hobby, but rather, doing something to take care of his family’s future was.  That’s just who Dan was to his core.  His kindness, generosity, thoughtfulness, and deeply caring nature knew no bounds, and those closest to him were grateful for the dependable, loyal father, husband and friend that he truly was.

In his later years, Dan traveled extensively with his wife Cindy, son Tim, and their best friend (Aunt) Bea.  They always made time to spend a few weeks together here and there at Bea’s timeshares down in FL, SC, VA, and out in Vegas.  Their trips brought countless memories from sports betting with his son and doing a little light gambling, to just walking “the strip”.  At the end of the day though, Dan loved to live simply.  If he could get in a nice walk around his neighborhood or Horn Pond, and curl up with his loving wife and dog Cori at the end of the day, he had everything he needed.

Along with his adoring wife Cindy, Dan is survived by his son, Dr. Timothy Breton and his wife Katherine of Farmington, ME; his granddaughter, Elizabeth Alice Breton; his sister, Loretta Odom of Burlington; his sister-in-law, Joan Breton of Waltham; his close friend Dr. Beatrice Snow of Woburn, as well as many other dear nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Dan was the beloved brother of the late Jeanette Gilman, Renaud Breton, and Joseph Breton.

Friends and family are invited to attend visitation on Friday, May 16th from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.  His Graveside Service with Military Honors will immediately follow at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge at 1:45 p.m.  As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations in Dan’s honor may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
