Obituary of James F. Gallo
James F. Gallo, age 78, a retired Belmont Police Officer of Burlington, passed away at Lahey Hospital on May 18, 2025. He was the beloved husband of Maryann (Pinto) Gallo, with whom he shared over 36 wonderful years of marriage.
Jim was born and raised in Brighton and was a proud graduate of Brighton High School. After completing his education, he enlisted in the United States Navy and honorably served three tours during the Vietnam War. He was stationed aboard the USS Coontz, a Farragut-class destroyer assigned to the U.S. Seventh Fleet, where he held the rank of Gunner’s Mate Third Class. The ship took part in antiaircraft and search-and-rescue missions. Jim served in three of the four wartime deployments and was the recipient of multiple honors, including the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea), and the National Defense Service Medal. He was extremely proud of his military service, his time aboard the USS Coontz, and above all, of being an American.
Following his military service, Jim joined the Belmont Police Department, where he served with unwavering dedication for 33 years. Much of his career was spent on the night shift, later transitioning to the day shift before retiring. He deeply loved being a police officer. Motivated by a strong sense of justice and compassion, Jim was known for his empathy and advocacy—especially in cases involving domestic violence, where he worked to ensure victims had access to safety and protection. He also championed child safety initiatives, including proper car seat installation, and proudly represented the Belmont Police Department in parades, ceremonial events, and memorial services.
For over 25 years, he participated in Jimmy Fund Walks and managed the Department’s canister program, raising over $100,000 for the cause—a contribution he was especially proud of.
Jim was a man who could never sit still. In his spare time, he was an avid gardener and landscaper who took great pride in his lawn, flower beds, and Christmas trees. He loved nature and the local wildlife, often spending time feeding birds and caring for a friendly chipmunk to whom he even built a little home.
A man of deep faith, Jim found a spiritual home at Mount Hope Church, where he was an active member of the Men's Group and several church committees. He was especially enthusiastic about using his carpentry skills to help renovate the church's Belmont satellite location. The church community became like a second family to him.
At his core, Jim was a devoted, dependable, and kind-hearted man. His cheerful, easygoing nature made him a friend to many, and his loyalty to his family and friends knew no bounds. His constant presence and support were defining qualities of his character, and he leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and unwavering commitment.
Along with his dear wife Maryann, James is survived by his loving children, Robyn Gallo of Belmont, and James Gallo of Belmont; Kimberly Spencer and her husband David Gillis of Burlington, and Pastor Joseph Ferreira and his wife Darcie of Indiana. He was the proud grandfather of Stephen Spencer, Matthew Spencer, Daniel Spencer, Jason Ferreira, Justin Ferreira, Kyle Tatten, Christopher Conroy, Dustyn Gallo, and Taelyn Gallo. He was the great grandfather of Juda Ferreira. Jim was the brother of William and Diane Gallo, Al Gallo, Tom and Amy Gallo , Carol Patukonis, Diane Lamothe, Ellie Bartlett, Helen Lux, Michael Lux, the late Maureen Woods, Joe Lamothe and the late Frank Gallo. He was also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
