I only knew Dick for a few years. We shared interests in computers, traveling, and the world at large. I admired Dick because…well…if life is a bottle of wine, Dick was resolute that he would consume every last drop. Of course, this analogy is strained because Dick wasn’t a wine guy, but I think he’d forgive me. In that spirit, wherever you are my friend, have an Old Fashioned on me. And toast our Lithuanian brethren. I’ll miss you.

Dick was a great mentor when I broke into television at WBZ. He was always ready to help a colleague and cherished his old friends. Sincere condolences to Sally and family.

Mr. Smilgis as I used to address him when I was a kid, was the quintessential Burlington man of the Golden Age of our town. Like so many of that day, they gave and gave and gave with joy in their hearts. Mr Smilgis was all of that. He always seemed to bask in the young kid’s exuberance. My fondest memories of him were in my formative days playing LL Baseball. He wasn’t one to teach much on the field. He used to teach me the rules and subtleties of the game that helped me be a better player. I fondly remember his patience showing me how to keep score in the book as scorekeeper. He showed all the kids this to the point where we used to ‘fight over’ who could keep score next inning. He was a kind soul and lightning rod to a fiery wide-eyed kid like me. I’ll always remember the pool parties he and Mr Soney threw for our Senators teams. He came across my path in life for a short time in those years but his impact on me was etched in stone. May God rest his soul.
