Michael Patrick McGee, 62, passed away on July 22, 2025, after a long illness.
Mike was born in Concord, Massachusetts, and was one of six children of Kenneth and Ruby McGee. He spent his childhood in Sudbury, where he discovered his love of music while attending Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School. There, he found his home backstage in the theater, and his niche in the school ‘s elite choruses. As a tenor, he had a beautiful voice perfectly suited for playing Nicely Nicely Johnson in the school’s production of Guys and Dolls and singing Irish ballads. Mike also loved the outdoors, and was a long-time member and advisor of Explorer Post Voyager 2. He enjoyed hiking with his friends in the mountains of New England, biking through Ireland, and canoeing his way through the Minnesota lakes.
He began his college education at Boston University, studying music, but later changed his focus to pursue a different career path. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science from Framingham State University. Despite the change in direction, music remained a lifelong passion. Mike loved singing a cappella and was a proud member of a group called “Noteworthy,” performing with close friends. He was also a cherished member of Heritage Chorale for many years.
Mike continued to share his gift of music through participation in the church choirs at Second Congregational Church and Crawford Memorial United Methodist Church in Winchester. He simply loved to sing and took great joy in bringing happiness to others through his music.
Another passion of Mike’s was volleyball. He thrived on the thrill of competition and the camaraderie of his teammates. He played in both the BSSC and Yankee Volleyball leagues and was known for his graceful setting ability, and competitive spirit.
Mike cherished the annual family summer trips to Smugglers' Notch Resort, where he spent time with a large group of friends. Days were filled with volleyball, pickleball, hiking, and other active pursuits, while evenings were reserved for shared meals, laughter, stories, and friendship.
Professionally, Mike began his career as a hardware technician at Apollo Computers, where he worked for five years. He then spent 29 years as a senior software engineer at Stratus Technologies.
Mike was equally talented with his hands, blending an engineer's mind with a craftsman’s skill. Mike could fix or improve almost anything around the house and enjoyed woodworking projects, often building furniture or crafting candle holders and trivets as gifts for family and friends.
Mike was husband of Dawn for almost 23 years. He was a devoted and proud father to Spencer McGee, cherishing their time together—whether it was sharing laughs or hunting Pokémon. He took great pride in the young man Spencer has become, especially as he pursues his studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
Mike was the youngest sibling of Lorrie McGee, Becky Grossman, Daniel McGee and his fiancé Tammy Lane, Jill McGee, and the late Peter McGee. He was the brother-in-law of Laurie Collins and of Hope Mertzer. He was the uncle of Tessa McGee. His family also includes many cousins and friends who will miss him deeply.
