Carol A. Dotalo Obituary

Carol Ann Dotalo, a woman whose life revolved around the family and friends she cherished, passed away on December 4, 2025, at the age of 87.

Carol was born in Cambridge, one of seven children of Daniel and Ernestine O’Connell. She grew up in a modest home filled with commotion, laughter, and love. The deep bond she shared with her siblings remained strong throughout her life. When her parents passed, Carol naturally stepped into the role of matriarch of the O’Connell family. She never wanted to see her siblings drift apart as they began families of their own, and she worked tirelessly to keep everyone connected, communicating, and close.

Carol married at the age of 18 and raised her children in the Ball Square neighborhood in Somerville. There were lean years as a single mother, providing and caring for her two children, yet she always managed to make ends meet with whatever she had. She was forever grateful to those who helped her along the way and spent her life repaying that kindness through unwavering generosity to her family, friends, and charitable organizations.

Carol worked for Central Hospital in Somerville for a number of years before taking a position at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Boston. She remained with Lahey when the hospital relocated to Burlington, working in the patient accounts and billing departments for 34 years, retiring at the age of 74. She enjoyed her work, was a loyal and dependable employee, and formed many lasting friendships that continued outside of work.

Carol could be described in countless ways—fun, the life of the party, thoughtful, generous, and kind. She was the ultimate hostess, and her door was always open. She loved to entertain, and she welcomed family and friends into her home for countless gatherings and holidays. In the summers, the family spent long, happy days at Campbell’s Beach and Nahant Beach, swimming, boating, and making memories. Carol was never afraid of a challenge and waterskied well into adulthood. Later, during the summer months, coworkers, neighbors, friends, and family naturally gravitated to her Drake Road home, where children played in the pool while the adults shared cookouts, stories, laughter, and a sense of community that Carol effortlessly created.

She loved to shop and spent weekends at the mall searching for the best deals—always for others rather than herself. She spent months preparing for Christmas, determined to make the holiday magical, convinced there were never enough presents for her family. That was simply Carol: always putting others first. Whether it was a smile, an invitation, an act of kindness, or a thoughtful gift, she brought joy, warmth, and a sense of belonging to everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Carol was all about her family. She was blessed to meet and marry Richard Dotalo, and together they moved to Burlington and created a wonderful life for their family. There was nothing she wouldn’t do for her children. She was their provider, protector, confidant, and best friend. It was never an obligation for her family to visit or call—it was simply a reflection of the loving, enduring connection she nurtured through a lifetime of caring.

She was delighted by the births of each grandchild, and later, by the arrival of her two great-grandchildren. For Carol, family was everything, and they were her greatest joy.

Carol will be deeply missed, but her memory—her spontaneity, warmth, kindness, and the love she showered upon everyone she cared for—will forever remain in their hearts and minds.

Carol was the beloved wife of the late Richard J. Dotalo.  She was the proud and supportive mother and mother-in-law of Joseph Roderick & his wife Laureen of Burlington and Kimberly Arpin & her husband Donald of Billerica.  She was the proud “Nan” to her grandchildren Shane Rogge, Raschele Rogge & her fiancé Sean Delaney, Ashley Rogge & her fiancé Alycia Greenwood, and Janelle A. Knight & her husband Ryan.  She was the great grandmother of Landon Rogge and Roselyn Knight.  Carol was the sister of Helen Bonasoro of Burlington, Daniel O’Connell of Carver, William O’Connell of Derry, NH, Richard O’Connell of N. Andover, the late Michael O’Connell, and late Judy Castellano.  She was also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Above all, Carol had a deep and tender love for all the dogs and pets that became part of the family throughout the years. Whether they were longtime companions or short-term visitors, she cared for each one with genuine affection. Their presence brought her comfort, laughter, and joy, and she cherished every moment spent with them. The love she showed to the animals in her life reflected the warmth and kindness she shared with everyone she held dear.  Tara, J.R., Pookie, Molly, Oliver, Haillie, Bella, Miela, Remy, Lance, Rhaenyra, Ripley, Fozzie, Mazie, Zoe, Ruba, Beau, Gia, and so many others. Each left a pawprint on her heart, and some of them now reunite with her in gentle peace.

Visiting hours will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn Street, Burlington on Friday, December 19 from 4 to 7 p.m.  A funeral service at the funeral home will begin at 7 p.m.  Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
