Obituary of Daniel Patrick Pergamo

Daniel Patrick Pergamo, passed away on Saturday morning, April 9, 2016 He was retired as the Acting Police Chief for the Town of Belmont. He was 80 years old. Daniel was born in Cambridge, the son of the late Jeremiah and Marjorie Pergamo. He had many wonderful childhood memories growing up in the Kerry Corner section of Cambridge. He served in the Navy on a submarine. He then spent 33 years as an officer on the Town of Belmont Police Department. To better himself, he went to school nights to earn his Undergraduate Degree from Northeastern University and then his Master’s Degree in Criminal Science from Anna Maria College in Paxton. Over the years, he slowly and quietly moved his way up the ranks in the Belmont Police Department. At the time of his retirement he was the acting Police Chief. Daniel was a very humble man, who never wanted to be the center of attention. When people asked what he did before he retired, he simply would say “I worked for municipal government”. He preferred to be known as a family man who loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchild. He and his wife Helen were married for 57 years. They raised 4 wonderful children together and were blessed to have 8 delightful grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. They made a wonderful couple as they did so much together, especially in their retirement years. Daniel and Helen also loved to dance and would spend Saturday nights either at the Canadian American Club in Watertown, the Irish American Club in Arlington, or Hibernian Club in Watertown with their many friends dancing the nights away. It gave Dan great joy to teach his daughters to dance and later dance with them on their wedding days. His family remembers him listening to Irish music as he puttered in his basement workshop. Daniel lived his life in a very honorable and humble manner, placing his family and community first above his own needs, never wanting attention, awards, or honors. Daniel was the loving husband of Helen (Poirier). He was the loving father of Carole Sceppa & her husband Joseph of Burlington, Patti Naylor & her husband Michael of Billerica, James & his wife Susan of Belmont and Joanne Shortell & her husband John of Burlington. He was predeceased by his siblings; Joseph Pergamo, Mary Mercer & John Pergamo.
