Obituary of Maria Couto

Maria Couto passed away at the Cambridge Hospital following a brief illness. She would have celebrated her 59th birthday in July. Maria was born in Brava, Cape Verde and resided there until the age of 9 when the family immigrated to the United States in 1966 and settled in Dorchester, MA, where they resided for many years. Maria is a graduate of Jeremiah Burke High School in Dorchester. Maria was a tireless worker and always eager to learn new things and frequently took courses, most recently Medical Billing and Coding. She worked for many years in the grocery industry, most recently at Stop & Shop supermarket in Somerville. Maria was a kind and loving person. She was fun, gregarious and extremely friendly and enjoyed chatting with people. Maria's hobbies included photography and videography. She was also a collector, and had a sizable assortment of stuffed animals and bric-a-brac. Maria loved to socialize whether it was with her family, her friends or new acquaintances and always had her camera with her for more than a few photos at each occasion. She was a humble, considerate and kind person who never sought attention but rather lavished attention on others. Maria was most content to be with her family, especially during the holidays. She had a very special relationship with her mother prior to her mother’s recent passing as well as with her brothers and sisters who were by her side throughout her short illness. Maria was the loving daughter of Vicencio Couto of Malden and the late Idilia (de Barros). She was the loving sister of Antonio and his wife Weenna Bucay-Couto of Burlington, Anna Brown of Stoneham, Joseph of North Andover, Lucinda Avlonitis and her husband Alex of New Jersey and Odelisa Macedo and her husband Oldemiro of Malden. Ms. Couto is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 24 at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side). Funeral services will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home at 9 a.m., Wednesday, May 25 and will be followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Margaret’s Church, 111 Winn St., Burlington. Interment in Lakeside Cemetery, Wakefield.
