Obituary of Jean Mazzocca
Jean (Emery) Mazzocca of Wilmington passed away on Monday after a long battle with heart disease. She was 85 years old.
Jean was a long-time resident of Burlington. She was born on Sept. 17, 1930. She was the daughter of the late George and the late Katherine (Keohane) Emery. She grew up in Cambridge attended the St Mary’s grammar school and graduated from the then Cambridge High and Latin School. While in high school she was a cheerleader for the football team. After high school she worked ………In 1952 she married Salvatore P. Mazzocca Jr. They lived in France while Sal served in the army during the Korean War. There she served as a volunteer in the SOS. Tap dancer. They returned to the Boston area and in 1957.
They raised a family of one girl and four boys at which time Jean was a big supporter of town sports. She was active in the Burlington Little League and other town baseball leagues. She was valued as a scorekeeper and even awarded a plaque one year for her efforts.
Jean was also interested in town politics, serving as a town meeting member, and working at the polls for dozens of elections over the years she lived in town. She was an active member of St. Malachy’s Catholic Church and was a member of the Morgairs for many years.
In 1985 she moved to Portland Maine and then to Old Orchard Beach. She worked at a local gift shop and an arcade, saving up tickets she won from ski ball to give to her grandchildren to redeem for toys when they came to visit. She also served a few non-profit organizations including in the the AIDS clinic as a volunteer. She stayed in Maine for about 10 years and it was at this time that she rediscovered her love of tap dancing. She took classes and performed in a few recitals. Jean loved her grandchildren.
Jean’s other interests were flower and vegetable gardening. Wherever she lived she planted a garden. Each harvest she beg family and neighbors to take some of her huge crop of zucchini and the tomatoes.. Jean’s greatest interest, though, was sports. While she still was able to toss a football with her sons at the age of 55, her biggest pleasure was being a fan. She loved the New England Patriots, the Boston Celtics, the Boston Bruins but most especially the Boston Red Sox. Despite recovering from surgery and hospitalization in May, she gathered up the strength to attend a game at Fenway Park with her family and the help of a cheerful Fenway wheelchair attendant.
