Obituary of Patrick Joseph Whelan

Patrick Joseph Whelan, passed away unexpectedly at the Lahey Hospital & Medical Center on Monday, March 6, 2017. He would have celebrated his 75th birthday on March 18th. Pat was husband of over 40 years to the late Barbara (Caruso), until her passing in 2009. He missed her greatly. Pat was born, raised and married in Somerville. He was one of 11 children born to the late Matthew and Catherine Whelan. Pat and Barbara raised their four oldest children in Somerville and then moved to Burlington when their youngest son Eric was in elementary school. Pat worked as a Mutuels Clerk at Wonderland Race Track from 1973 until his retirement in 2008. He loved his job at Wonderland and also loved the sport of racing. Pat was an avid sports fan and followed all Boston sports teams. Pat enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and loved telling others about their accomplishments. In his retirement, Pat enjoyed spending time at Dunkin Donuts, drinking coffee and talking with friends he made there. Pat was the proud father of Kimberly Daly & her husband Andrew of Burlington, John & his wife Kerri of Stratham, NH, Tony & his wife Jennifer of Danvers, Cindy McGaffigan & her husband James of Methuen and Eric & his fiancée Tracy Moffatt of North Andover. Loving grandfather of Justin, Evan, Jessica, Dylan, Daniel & Ryan Whelan; Christopher & Nicholas Daly and James McGaffigan. Funeral Services will be private.
