Berardi and Catherine M. (Iovino) Berardi. From an early age, education was a very important part of his life. Dan was a graduate of Malden Catholic High School and then went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Boston College. After his undergraduate degree, Dan enlisted in the Marines to serve during the Korean War. He held the rank of Sergeant and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion of the 155mm Gun Battery. He proudly served from 1951 to 1953 and then served 6 more years in the Reserves. He returned home and went back to Boston College to earn his Master’s Degree. He then earned a Degree in Accounting from Bentley College. Over the decades, he took classes at Harvard, Suffolk Law School, Boston State, and Fisher College. He also spent six weeks on a summer Fellowship at Yale University. What does a perpetual student become? A teacher! Dan worked for a total of 38 years as a science teacher in the Malden and Lexington school systems. Much of his time was spent at Muzzey Junior High and then Clarke Middle Schools in Lexington. He also taught evening courses in Accounting at Fisher College, Bentley College, and Mount Ida College. As a born educator, he constantly challenged himself, his children, as well as his students to learn, experience, and appreciate all the intricacies of life. Following his retirement from teaching in 1992, to keep active, Dan held a part time job at the Brookstone Store at the Burlington Mall for four years, where he enjoyed interacting with both customers and fellow employees. Among his other interests, Dan loved to dance. He and his wife, Jean, took ballroom dance lessons and later joined the Wilmington Ballroom Dance Club, which they thoroughly enjoyed. He particularly liked the Latin dances. For many years, Dan was also a dedicated mall walker. He looked forward to his daily walks and then meeting up with his friends after for coffee and socializing. When at home, he could always be found with a book in his hand, a cup of coffee at his side, and music playing in the background. He loved to listen to a variety of music, especially Italian favorites. His favorite places to visit included Ogunquit, Maine for rest, relaxation, walks on the beach, and the Ogunquit Playhouse. He and Jean also went on many of the Burlington Recreation Department sponsored trips with friends and neighbors. However, Dan was most happy at home enjoying family meals, celebrating holidays and being surrounded by his many family members and friends. Dan was the loving husband for 55 years of Jean D. (Scavongelli) Berardi. He was the loving father of Daniel Berardi, Jr of Henderson, NV, Carolyn Berardi of Arlington, and Christine Cunningham & her husband John of Arlington.
