Obituary of Francis Flaherty
Francis “Frank” J. Flaherty a loving husband, father and grandfather passed away after an extended illness on Saturday morning, August 12, 2017. He was 79 years old. Frank was born in Medford, MA one of three sons born to Walter and Eva Flaherty. He grew up in the Union Square area of Somerville and was a graduate of Malden Catholic High School. He was a graduate of Bentley College, where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting in 1973. He served in the Army National Guard and worked for over 35 years for Chelsea, Revere, Winthrop (CRW) Elder Services. He started as an accountant and retired at the age of 75 as their Chief Financial Officer. The Nonprofit was founded in 1972 and Frank joined the organization 1976. He was part of CRW’s growth and commitment to provide essential home and community based care and resources to older adults, adults living with disabilities, and caregivers. They coordinated home care services, Meals on Wheels, transportation, and enrichment opportunities for program participants and the community at large. Frank believed in elder rights and advocated for senior benefits. He saw the Nonprofit rise to a budget of over 8 million dollars. CRW served thousands of elderly and disabled people giving them the opportunity to live independently and have a higher quality of life.
Frank was a member of the Irish American Club of Chelsea, Woburn Elks, and a bowling league in Somerville. He loved playing cards with his friends on Tuesday nights. Frank was a sports fan and followed all Boston Sports teams. He enjoyed listening to the Red Sox and Celtics games. He was also an avid golfer and he loved the ocean. He was a resident of Woburn for 50 years and was an active parishioner and Eucharistic Minister at St. Barbara’s Church in Woburn.
Frank was the beloved husband of 50 years to Mary Carol “Kerry” (Richter) Flaherty. He was the loving father of Anne Flaherty of Amherst, Sean Flaherty and his wife Inge of San Diego, CA, Karen Morse and her husband George of Hampstead, NH, and Kelly Flaherty of Shelburne Falls. He was the brother of Robert Flaherty of Prince Edward Island (PEI), formerly of Wilmington, and the late Walter Flaherty, Jr. Frank was the proud grandfather of Miette and Ivysong Flaherty Muller, Conorrhys Flaherty, Sequoia, Jaden, and Raia LeBreux, Michaella Morse, and the late Austin and Dyllan Morse.
Visiting hours will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., Burlington (exit 34 off Rt. 128/95, Woburn side) on Tuesday, August 15th, from 4:00-8:00 PM. Funeral from the Sullivan Funeral Home on Wednesday at 9:00 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Barbara's Church, 138 Cambridge Rd, Woburn at 10:00 AM.
