Obituary of Steven Edward Olchowski Hawkins

Dr. Steven Edward Olchowski Hawkins passed away after a short illness at the Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington, MA on Saturday morning, August 26, 2017. He was 69 years old. Steven was born and raised in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, the oldest of four children born to Dr. Edward Francis Olchowski and Evelyn Virginia Olchowski. He was a graduate of Cranwell Preparatory School in Lenox, MA. He earned his undergraduate degree from The College of the Holy Cross and his Doctorate Degree from the St. Louis University School of Medicine. He went on further to specialize in colorectal surgery. He had a long career at the Bon Secours Hospital in Grosse Pointe, Michigan and at the New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC. When in Grosse Pointe, Steven was President of the Wayne County Medical Society from 1991-1992. Steven had a wide variety of interests outside of medicine, including fly fishing, bird watching, painting, and gardening. He enjoyed sharing his passion for the outdoors by skiing, boating and camping with his children. Steve was an active member of Toast Masters, and an avid bridge player. He also enjoyed staying current on all the local, national, and international politics. Although Steven had left New England many years ago, he always remained a loyal fan of both the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. Steven was the husband of 33 years of Penelope (Langlois) Hawkins. He is survived by his mother, Evelyn Virginia Olchowski of Pittsfield, MA. He was the proud father of Alex Olchowski of Lebanon Springs, NY, Adam Olchowski of Columbia, SC, Amy Nedervelt of Chicago, IL, Zachary Olchowski of Turkey and Nicholas Olchowski of Grand Rapids, MI . He was the brother of Regina Olchowski of Atlanta, GA, Janet O. Kmetz of Topsfield, MA, and the late Dr. Edward C. Olchowski. A private family burial will take place on Saturday, September 23 in Turners Falls, Massachusetts. On that same day, there will be a Memorial Luncheon in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
