Obituary of Shirley McGourty
Shirley T. (McDonald) passed away at Sunrise of Burlington Assisted Living, on Saturday morning, September 30, 2017. The beloved wife of the late Raymond F. McGourty, she would have celebrated her 90th birthday in November.
Shirley was born and raised in Everett. She was one of five children born to the late James and Marion McDonald. She was a 1945 graduate of Everett High School. Shirley and Ray married in 1951. They moved to the Winnmere section of Burlington in 1954 where they made many lifelong friendships and raised their son Jim. She worked as a secretary in the High Tech Industry for many years.
Shirley was a devout Catholic and a longtime parishioner of St. Margaret’s in Burlington. Her faith and her church were an important part of her life. She was very involved in many of the Church activities throughout the years. She taught Religious Education, helped with many of the bazaars and assisted her friend Jean with the coordination of the First Communion Breakfast for many years. She enjoyed bowling and dancing. In later years she participated in many of the activities at the Senior Center such as bingo and exercise class. Shirley will be remembered as a kind and caring woman who was devoted to her family and her faith.
Shirley was the beloved wife of the late Raymond. Shirley was the loving mother of James of Burlington. Grandmother of Christopher & Derek Volpicelli and Robert McGourty. Also survived by 7 great grandchildren. Sister of the late Mary, James, Joseph and Gerald McDonald.
Funeral from the Edward V Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128/95 Woburn side) on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret’s Church, 111 Winn St., Burlington at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Tuesday 6-8 p.m. Interment in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Burlington. In lieu of flowers memorials in Shirley’s name may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 309 Waverly Oaks Rd., Waltham, MA 02452
