Obituary of Basil W. Fathers
Basil W. Fathers passed away at the Aberjona Nursing Home on Thursday evening, September 14, 2017. The beloved husband of the late Dorothy E. (Snow), he was 95 years old.
Basil was the son of the late Walter and Olive Fathers. Basil was born, raised and educated in Oxford, England. At 18, he joined the British Navy. At the age of 37, he came to the United States with his wife Dorothy and their daughter Jean. They began their life in the United States in Somerville, eventually making their forever home in Medford. Basil worked hard to provide for his family and had a career as a brick layer. He always enjoyed masonry work, redoing his front steps at 94 years of age! Basil was independent, still living by himself at the age of 95.
Basil led a very full and active life. He had a wonderful marriage to his wife Dorothy. At the time of her death in 2013, they had been married 69 years. Basil and Dorothy loved to travel, travelling throughout the United States and Europe. They especially enjoyed travelling with their daughter Jean and her husband Bob. He had a great love of animals and he treasured his dog “Apache”. He was the proud “Pafa” of three grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and in 2015, he reached the milestone of 5 generations with a great great granddaughter. They were an important part of his life and enjoyed spending time with all of them.
Basil was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy (Snow). He was the loving father of Jean Button and her husband Robert of Dracut, formerly of Stoneham. He was the proud “Pafa” of Alan Butts and his wife Kathy of Wells ME, Karen Crawford and her husband Kris of Woburn, and Jackie Gauthier and her husband Kevin of Nashua, NH. Basil is also survived by 7 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter. At Basil’s request, funeral services were private.
