Obituary of Anthony R Gulla
Anthony R. Gulla, a retired engineer at Boston Edison, passed away after a lengthy illness on Sunday night, January 28, 2018. He was 85 years old.
Anthony was born in Boston, the son of Italian immigrants, the late Anthony and Rose Gulla. He grew up in the North End of Boston. He enlisted in in the Navy and served almost 4 years during the Korean Conflict. He held the rank of Engine Man, Petty Officer Third Class. After his military service, he returned to the North End and started courting a cute and adorable Italian girl also from the North End, Florence Procopio. They married in 1957 and purchased a home in Woburn in 1958. Anthony went to work in for Boston Edison. He started in their steam plants. He went back to school nights for 8 years learning to become an electrical and mechanical engineer. With all his experience and education, Anthony moved his way up the ranks becoming an Electrical and Mechanical Engineer for Boston Edison specializing and steam energy production. He loved his job and friends at Edison and retired after 44 years with the company. Anthony and Florence had five daughters. It wasn’t the easiest thing being the only man in a home with six women, but he made the best of it. He was always there for all his girls. He made sure that they had whatever they needed including a good education and a few weddings. Many of his family vacations were camping trips in New Hampshire and Maine. He would hook up his pop up trailer and fill the car will kids, sleeping bags, and provisions and create last memories for his family. Anthony also enjoyed sailing. He had a small sailboat and enjoyed spending sunny days on Lake Quannapowitt sailing and testing his nautical skills. What he spent most of his free time was maintain his yard. He loved cutting his grass, planting and trimming his bushes, bark mulch, and maintain his flower beds. His goal was to have one of the nicest yards in the neighborhood. Anthony didn’t need much to be happy. He was very content working around his home and being surrounded by his family.
Anthony was the beloved husband of Florence (Procopio) Gulla. He was the caring supportive father to Roseann Gulla-Devaney & her husband Paul Devaney of Winchester, Marlene Doyle of Woburn, Elizabeth Gulla of Woburn, Valerie Morton and her husband Greg Morton of Westford, and Claudia Fagan of Tyngsborough. He was predeceased by his siblings; Jenny Penta and John and Joseph Gulla. He was the proud grandfather of Cory, Shauna & Jesse Doyle, Adam, Justin, Allison, Sarah, & Gwen Morton, Rebecca & Bethany Devaney, Alex & Hunter Fagan. He was als0 the great grandfather of Benjamin Morton.
A Visiting hour will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., Burlington (exit 34 off RTE 128/95, Woburn side) on Thursday, Feb. 1 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Barbara Church, 138 Cambridge Road, Woburn at Noon and will conclude with an interment in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park in Peabody.
