Obituary of Michael Joseph Petrino

Visiting hours have been changed to Wednesday, March 14 from 4:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Funeral services have been changed to Thursday, March 15 at 1:00 p.m. Michael Joseph Petrino, a Veteran of WW II and Recepient of the Purple Heart passed away after an extended illness at the E. N. Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford on Friday morning, March 9, 2018. He was 92 years old. Michael was born in Watertown, the son of the late Dominic and Mary Petrino. He grew up and was educated in Watertown and was a graduate of Watertown High School. He enlisted to fight in World War II at the age of 18. He earned the rank of Corporal and was assigned to Battery D of the 841st Anti Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion. He saw extensive action in the Rhineland. His unit had endured Germany’s last big offensive that went from December 16, 1944 to January 25, 1945 and then on February 27 he was wounded. He was discharged from the Army on February 6, of 1946 and was the recipient of the Purple Heart, American theater Campaign Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon. He continued his support of the military as a member of the Disable American Veterans Organization. Michael spent most of his working career working MIT Lincoln Labs. He worked as a proof reader helping some of the smartest minds to put there theories, assumptions, calculations, and studies into coherent documents. During those years he took college classes to better understand what the mathematicians, engineers, and theorist were discussing and writing about. He retired at the age of 62. Michael had a part time career as a musician. He started playing the violin as a young child. He played the keyboard and the saxophone for the bands, “Comeback Kids” and Silvertones”. He wrote some music for the bands who played for a wide variety of audiences covering many of the great songs of the 40’s and 50’s. Michael was a member of the Burlington Council on Aging where he participated in Bingo and other activities. He enjoyed painting and often enjoyed trying to recreate pictures on canvas. He enjoyed time spent in Lincoln, New Hampshire. He will be remembered as a man with a big heart, strong work ethic, and a man who would do almost anything for a family member or friend. Michael was beloved husband of Jeanne E. (Cote) Petrino of Burlington. He was the loving stepfather of Julie Levesque of Brookline, Robert Levesque of Nashua, Michael Levesque of Somersworth, NH and the late Rena McCray. He was predeceased by his sister, late Dora Cirillo. Mike was the grandfather of Jayma, Patrick, Sara & Teagan Levesque and Kimberly & Damien Mann Funeral Services will be held at the Edward V Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128/95 Woburn side) on Thursday, March 15 at 1:00 p.m. Burial to follow in Pine Haven Cemetery, Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, March 14 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
