Obituary of George M. Major

George M. Major, passed away at the Sunrise of Burlington Assisted Living on Saturday afternoon, May 26, 2018. The beloved husband of the late Thelma (Ivester) he was 86 years old. George was born in Somerville. He was the son of the late Anthony and Stella Major. George was a veteran of the Korean War serving his country in the United States Coast Guard from 1949 – 1952. He married his wife Thelma in 1954 and moved to the Lantern Lane neighbor of Burlington in 1960 where they raised their two sons. He had many long-lasting friendships with his neighbors. George was a proud graduate of Northeastern University and went on to have a long and successful career at Harvard University. George was very involved in the community of Burlington and his son’s lives. He coached Little League Baseball as well as Youth Basketball. George and Thelma enjoyed leisure travel to dozens of countries and cities around the globe. They also enjoyed the sea and sand near George’s family home on Cape Cod. George and Thelma were blessed to have a wonderful 55 years of marriage. George relished the time he spent with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren visiting them in Connecticut, California and most recently Arizona. George was the beloved husband of Thelma (Ivester). Loving father of Robert & his wife Hope of Chandler AZ and George, Jr. & his wife Sharon of Avon, CT. Proud grandfather of Justine Major Garcia & her husband Rudy of San Tan Valley, AZ, Shaylin Major Har-El & her husband Amir of New York, NY, Casey Major Flores & her husband Joseph of Gilbert, AZ, Eric Major & his fiancée Michelle Foley of Boston and Marissa Major of Boston. Great grandfather of Ethan & Elyse Garcia. Dear friend of Louise Hale of Somerville. Funeral from the Edward V Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128/95 Woburn side) on Saturday, June 2 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Malachy’s Church, 99 Bedford St. Burlington at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Friday 4-8 p.m. Interment in Pine Haven Cemetery, Burlington.
