Obituary of Larry L. Nielsen

Larry L. Nielsen, a retired Clinical Research Scientist at Philips Healthcare, passed away on Friday morning, August 3, 2018, following a courageous battle with ALS, he was 77 years old Larry was born, raised and educated in Laramie Wyoming. He was the son of the late Vernon and Dorothy Nielsen. Larry went on to further his education graduating from the University of Wyoming College of Engineering and Applied Sciences graduating with his Bachelor’s Degree with Honors in 1965 and his Master’s Degree with honors in 1966. It was while he was attending the University of Wyoming that Larry would meet Nadine Platt who was a fellow student. They married in 1964 while they were both still in school. In 1966 Larry was offered at position at Hewlett Packard Medical Products Group in Waltham, Massachusetts. They moved to Thistle Road in Burlington which was a wonderful neighborhood for their children to grow up in. Larry worked through the transition from HP to Agilent Technologies and then to Philips Healthcare in Andover, MA, with a career that spanned 51 years. He retired last year as an R& D Clinic Research Scientist. Larry has multiple patents and worked on many publications throughout the years. He had a thirst for knowledge and was always reading books, publications and took numerous continuing education courses at Northeastern University focusing on Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering and Management. Larry had many hobbies and interests. He was a talented craftsman and while in college he worked as a carpenter. He was a handy man and was “Mr. Fix It”! When his daughter Natalee was remodeling her bathroom Larry stepped in and helped with the remodel. Also, Larry and his wife Nadine loved to travel in their later years. They took day trips throughout the New England states with one of their favorite destinations being Cape Cod and Maine. The family also took numerous trips back to Wyoming and California for family reunions. Larry was a very involved dad to his children Natalee and Troy. When Troy played baseball in the Burlington Youth Program Larry was an umpire. Larry was a loyal and supportive dad who taught his children the importance of a good education and a strong work ethic. He was a wonderful teacher and mentor to Natalee and Troy. He was a proud grandfather and his grandchildren brought him great joy. He helped to babysit his Natalee's grandchildren for many years. Another one of Larry’s talents was photography with his favorite subjects to photograph being his grandchildren as well as outdoor scenery around the house and Philips campus. Larry will be remembered as a man as a man with many talents and accomplishments and his greatest accomplishment that of being husband, father and grandfather. Larry was the beloved husband of the late Nadine Ann (Platt). Loving father of Natalee Bushen & her husband Kirk of Tewksbury and Troy Nielsen & his wife Lucy of Burlington. Proud grandfather of Myles, Stella & Esther Nielsen and Mitch & Jake Bushen. Brother of Diana Swanson & her husband Don of CA. Funeral from the Edward V Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128/95 Woburn side) on Wednesday, Aug. 8 at 11 a.m. Followed by Funeral Services at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, 60 Forest Park Road, Woburn at Noon. Visiting hours at the Funeral Home on Tuesday 4-8 p.m. Interment in Lakeside Cemetery, Wakefield.
