Obituary of Kenneth N. Flodstrom

Kenneth N. Flodstrom, a retired Insurance Manager, passed away at his home in Billerica on Saturday evening, September 22, 2018. The beloved husband of the late Pauline “Polly” (Wagner) he was 83 years old. Ken was born, raised and educated in Medford. He was one of three sons born to the late Elmer and Gladys Flodstrom. Ken was a veteran of the Korean War serving his country in the United States Coast Guard. He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Ken worked in the Insurance Industry. He was a licensed insurance agent and worked at Commercial Union Insurance Company as an Insurance Manager for over 23 years. Ken and Polly married and eventually settled in Burlington in 1962 where they would raise their two children. When his son Brian was young Ken was very involved in town sports. He was an Umpire for the Burlington Baseball Association. He also coached both Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball as well as Basketball for the Burlington Rec. Department. As a dad he was firm but fair and a wonderful role model and laid a great foundation in the lives for Brian and Kristin. During their retirement years Ken and Polly enjoyed traveling with their close friends and family. Some of their destinations included Siesta Key Florida, Aruba and Martha’s Vineyard. They also took trips to visit his son Brian and his family when they were living in Louisiana, Florida, Rhode Island and Cape Cod. Ken’s favorite place to vacation with his family was Camp Wulamat on Newfound Lake. For over 52 years the family would spend three weeks every summer at the camp. The family devolved many close friendships at the lake over the years. Ken was blessed to spend three weeks there this past August with his daughter Kristin and her family. Ken was a quick-witted man with a wonderful sense of humor that he never lost. He was a people person and a fun-loving man who was full of life. Ken lived most of his life on Manhattan Drive in Burlington and he was considered the “Mayor of Manhattan Dive”. He was always walking the neighborhood and chatting with the neighbors. After Polly passed away and his health started to decline, Ken moved into an in-law apartment with Kristin and her husband Glenn in Billerica. Ken was very proud of his six grandchildren. He was their beloved “Bumpa”. He was looking forward to the wedding of his grandson Shawn in October and the birth of his first great grandchild in the Spring. Ken’s family would like to thank the VNA of Middlesex East Visiting Nurse Hospice, which is a member of Lahey Health Continuing Care, for all their care and support for Ken. Ken was the beloved husband of the late Pauline A. (Wagner). He was the loving father of Brian Flodstrom & his wife Janet of Stratham, NH and Kristin Duncan & her husband Glenn of Billerica. Ken was the proud grandfather of Matthew Duncan & his wife Jenna, Shawn Duncan & his fiancé Jaclyn Demary, Mark Duncan & his girlfriend Kelli McElligott and Amanda, Michael & Nicholas Flodstrom. Brother of the late Norman and Robert Flodstrom. Funeral Services will be held at the Edward V Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128/95 Woburn side) on Thursday, Sept. 27 at 10 a.m. Burial to follow in Pine Haven Cemetery, BURLINGTON. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, Sept. 26 from 4-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials in Ken’s name may be made to a charity of your choice.
