Eulogy for Adeline Price by Michael Monahan My Cousin Don and his wife Diane have asked me to say a few words in remembrance of my Aunt Adeline. When Don called me I thought …. I’m not sure if I’m the right person to do this … as I am sure …many of you … both friends and family… have far more memories and far more interesting stories surrounding the life of Aunt Adeline … But I am truly honored that I was asked to speak …. So I would like to speak … of her amazing spirit and her strong will, even in the face of illness and her advancing years … and the aches and pains that accompanied those years. Watching her decline was painful and sad for us all…but she set an example for us all …. Through all of her hardships...she endured … through the loss of her husband at a young age … she carried on … raising 2 sons she loved…. by herself … she thrived … She was a wonderful mother …. As Don and David can attest. Raising 2 boys alone I’m sure was quite a challenge … but you could tell she loved it. These 2 men… Don and David are a testament to her devotion. She was extremely proud of her sons. She was also quite lucky to have two wonderful and attentive daughters-in-law in Diane and Louise. Their caring and support was incredible to watch. They are both amazing women. She was an attentive grandmother to David, Julie, Matthew and Kelly …. Aunt Adeline spoke often of her grandchildren whenever I visited. You could see the love in her eyes whenever she did. And she was a sister anyone would be lucky to have ... my mother certainly adored her. I was lucky enough to reconnect with Aunt Adeline these passed few years with my wife Mary Ann … I was able to watch and observe her…. not as the young boy who would come to visit at holidays and birthdays and all of those great family gatherings, but as an adult … as someone who could appreciate her humor … her strength of character … her sense of right and wrong … and as we all know, she was very strong in her convictions and quite vocal too about those convictions … it was quite refreshing really … With aunt Adeline … you knew exactly where you stood …. A real Irish woman …. I would like to speak also of her generosity… to her family and friends … the generosity of her time, of her spirit, and best of all … the generosity of her laughter….. She could draw a crowd and she loved to laugh … It may sound like a cliché, but her door was always open to friends and family … and it has been especially nice to see that after all these years … the cousins still showed up for a laugh and a conversation and to see how Aunt Adeline was fairing…. I will miss that connection …. That cohesiveness that often times many families lack…that thread that connects us to our parents’ and grandparents’ generations. As her nephew, I want to thank Aunt Adeline for making that available to us. She was an honorable lady …with genuine spirit to be admired … and a dear soul. We will all keep her in our hearts … and prayers… always. We will all miss her dearly.
