Obituary of James Gillis
James J. Gillis, passed away at the Woburn Nursing Center on Thursday morning, February 19, 2009. The husband of the late Catherine (Madden), he was 88 years old.
Jim was born in Boston, the son of Canadian immigrants, the late Peter and Alice Gillis. He was raised and educated in Dorchester. Jim was a veteran of World War II serving his country in the United States Marine Corp where he achieved the rank of Technical Sergeant. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and was extremely proud of his service to his country. He worked for as number of print supply companies as a salesman. Jim was a long time resident of Brighton. He moved to Burlington in 1984 to be closer to his family. He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus in Brighton as well as a longtime member of AA. Jim enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Jim is the beloved husband of the late Catherine (Madden). He is the loving father of Janet L. Durkin of Burlington, Virginia M. Merritt of Tewksbury, Catherine A. Raeke of Marlborough, and the late James J. Gillis, Jr. He is the brother of the late Mary DeCoste and Peter Gillis. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 9 – 10:30 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret’s Church, 111 Winn St., Burlington at 11 a.m. Interment in Blue Hills Cemetery, Braintree. Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
