Obituary of Elizabeth Penney
Elizabeth F. Penney, who dedicated her life to Health Care, passed away at the Village at Willow Crossing in Mansfield on Sunday morning, March 22, 2009. She was 91 years old.
Elizabeth was born, raised and educated in Arlington. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary “Mae” Penney. Elizabeth graduated from Cambridge City Hospital School of Nursing in 1939. She then went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Education from Boston University in 1952 and her Master of Science in Health Education from Boston University in 1962.
Elizabeth was very proud of her career in Nursing. She worked for many years at Cambridge City Hospital where she held the positions of Private Duty Nurse, Head Nurse, Teaching and Administrative Supervisor in the Pediatric Unit and Assistant Director of Nursing in Charge of Nursing Service. Elizabeth also worked as Assistant Director of Nurses at Waltham Hospital and at Winthrop Community Hospital where she held the positions of Director of Nurses and Administrative Assistant, Assistant Administrator, and Director of Education. At the end of her career she worked for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
Elizabeth was a member of the American Nurses Association, National League for Nurses, New England Hospital Assembly and Massachusetts Hospital Association. She was also the Founder, Charter President, and member of the North Shore Regional Council – Directors of Nursing School. Elizabeth was a parishioner of St. Agnes in Arlington where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and Lecturer. Elizabeth enjoyed traveling and had visited locations throughout the United States and Europe. She also loved visiting Scituate in the summer where she enjoyed many special times with her cousins.
Elizabeth is the beloved daughter of the late Thomas P. and Mary “Mae” Penney. She was the cousin of Louise (Sullivan) Corcoran of South Yarmouth, Lawrence Sullivan of Tenino, WA, Barbara Wilson, Rosemary Farrell both of Norwood, the late Edward Sullivan and their families. She was the beloved friend of the Hallisey and Shaughnessy families. A visitation will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Tuesday, March 24 from 10 – 11:30 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Agnes Church, Medford St., Arlington at Noon. Interment in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington.
