Obituary of Walter Bevis

Walter R. Bevis, a proud and independent man, who like most of his generation worked hard to provide for his family, passed away after a long illness, at his home on Friday morning, March 27, 2009. He was 85 years old. Walter was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia. His family immigrated to the United States when he was just a child. He grew up and was educated in Cambridge. He served in the Navy during WW II as a Motor machinist mate Third Class. During the war he served on the USS LST 119, USS LST 1009, USS LST 1022, and the USS Egeria. He was the recipient of the WW II Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, and the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star. He was very proud of his service to his country. Walter was retired from Harvard University where he worked in their maintenance department. He had previously worked for Ford Motors at their assembly plant in Somerville as a technician. Walter was a man who believed in hard work and providing for your family. He built his own home in Burlington, where he has lived for the past 55 years. He worked part time at Grahams Farm in Burlington when he was young. He enjoyed spending summers by the lake in Franklin, New Hampshire. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and most importantly being with his family. He was married to his wife Eleanor for 65 years. He was a caring father who taught the importance of hard work. He was a proud grandfather and was blessed to have seen the births of 10 great grandchildren during his life. Walter was the beloved husband of Eleanor L. (Phillips) Bevis of Burlington. He was the loving father of Karen Witkus of Taunton, Walter R. & his wife Sandra of Burlington, Joyce Williams of Burlington, and Laura Berlandi of Woburn. Brother of Pat McCLosky of Chelmsford, Carol Cooper of Deerfield, NH, the late Cyril Bevis, Helen Kelley, Dorothy Bevis, Lawrence Bevis, Lillian Biagiotti , Doris Pond, John Bevis, and Shirley Bevis. He was the proud grandfather of 12 and great grandfather of 10. Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan funeral home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Monday, March 30 at 9 a.m. Followed by Graveside Services at Pine haven Cemetery, Bedford St., Burlington at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Sunday 4-7 p.m. Memorials in Walter’s name may be made to the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans, 17 Court St., Boston, MA 02108 or www.NESHV.org.
