Obituary of Richard Nichols

Richard D. Nichols, a resident of Burlington for 35 years, passed away after a long illness at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington on Friday morning, June 12, 2009. The beloved husband of 47 years of Joyce (Probst), he was 69 years old. Richard was born in Boston the son of the late George Nichols and the late Helen (Waytkus-Nichols) Monahan. He grew up in the Mission Hill Section of Boston. Richard honorably served in the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1960. He had owned and operated Richie’s Canteen for over 32 years. Richard was an extremely hard working individual. His day started at 2:30 in the morning, preparing his truck for the day’s work. He worked 6 days a week providing refreshment to his many local customers on his route in Cambridge. He took great pride in his business. Richard had also worked as a salesman at Building 19 1/2 for over 12 years. He was a member of a number of bowling leagues over the years. He loved sports and was a faithful fan of all the Boston Sports teams. He enjoyed gardening and was known for his great tomato plants. He enjoyed working on projects around his home and traveling. Richard will be remembered for the love of his family and his concern for others. Richard was the beloved husband of Joyce Elaine (Probst). He was the loving father of Richard Nichols, Jr. of Munich, Germany, Michael Nichols of Burlington, and Theresa Noble of Merritt Island, FL. He was the brother of Barbara Adams of Burlington, the late Sandra Thomas and Leonard Nichols. He was the brother-in-law of William Adams of Burlington, Paul Thomas of Hudson, NH, and Carol Nichols of NC. He was the proud grandfather of Frank Noble, IV of Port St. John, FL and Anna Kim Nichols of Munich, Germany. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. A Memorial wake will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home on Sunday, June 14 from 3 to 5 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Richard’s name may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Late owner of Richie’s Canteen.
