Obituary of Thelma Major

Thelma, (Ivester) Major, a loving wife of over 55 years passed away after a brief illness at her home Saturday night, July 25, 2009. She was 77 years old. Thelma was born in Somerville, the daughter of the late Samuel and Mabel Ivester. She grew up and was educated in Somerville. She married her husband, George in 1954. They lived in Somerville for the first years of their marriage, and then settled in Burlington in 1960 to raise their two sons. Thelma had worked for a number of years as the office manager for Emerson Gardens Property Management in Lexington. She enjoyed being involved in Burlington Politics and would lend her support and time to candidates she believed in. She taught religious education at St. Malachy’s Church. She was a talented cook. She enjoyed knitting, reading, shopping, and gardening. She had traveled extensively over the years, with some of her favorite destinations being the Caribbean, Europe, Hawaii, and Florida. She was a devoted wife and homemaker. Thelma was extremely proud of her sons and their families. She enjoyed attending their sporting events, activities, and important and special occasions in their lives. She will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed. Thelma was the beloved wife George M. Major of Burlington. She was the loving mother of Robert Major & his wife Hope of San Diego and George Major & his wife Sharon of Avon, CT. She was the sister of Ona Magee of Salem, NH and the late Dorothy Martin. She was the proud grandmother of Justine & Casey of San Diego, CA, Shaylin, Eric, and Marissa all of Avon, CT and Great grandmother of Ethan of San Diego, CA. Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St, BURLINGTON (exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Thursday, July 30 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Malachy’s Church at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. Interment in Pine Haven Cemetery, Burlington. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Thelma’s name may be made to the Visiting Nurse Community Health, 37 Broadway, Arlington, MA 02474 or St. Malachy’s Memorial Fund, 99 Bedford St., Burlington, MA 01803.
