Obituary of Joseph Avila
Joseph M. Avila, an active member of the Burlington Knights of Columbus passed away at the Beverly Hospital in Beverly on Friday morning, Sept. 4, 2009. He was 80 years old. Joe was born in Somerville, the son of Portuguese immigrants, the late Jerry and Thelma Avila. He grew up and was educated in Somerville. He had worked as a Master Technician for Sears for 33 years. After he retired, he traveled cross country to California with his brother, Daniel. He was an avid reader. He was a member of several bowling leagues and also enjoyed cooking. He enjoyed a good game of cards.
As a member of the Burlington Knights of Columbus, he served in all the elected positions in the Third and Fourth Degree including, Grand Knight of the Third Degree and Faithful Navigator of the Fourth Degree. He supported all fund raising events and the social events as well. He proudly served on the Fourth Degree Honor Guard. He truly valued the Knights of Columbus works within the church and the community.
Joseph was the brother of Daniel Avila of Burlington and the late Anthony Avila. He was the son of the late Jerry and Thelma Avila. Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret’s Church, 111 Winn St., Burlington at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Tuesday 4-8 p.m. Interment in Pine Haven Cemetery, Burlington.
