Obituary of Alfred Gilbert

Alfred “Al” J. Gilbert passed away unexpectedly on Saturday morning, September 5, 2009. He was 69 years old. Al was born in Boston. He was the son of the late Edwin and Margaret Gilbert. He grew up in Arlington and was a graduate of Christopher Columbus High School in the North End of Boston. He served in the Army during the Vietnam Era. He received the Good Conduct Medal and Marksman Medal. He returned home and began a 33 year career as a letter carrier for the US Post Office. He spent most of those years as a mailman in Arlington. Al was a great cook. He maintained a backyard garden so that he could have the freshest ingredients for his culinary creations. There were many great meals and dinner conversations spent at the kitchen table thanks to Al. Al was an avid Boston Sports Fan and faithfully followed the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics, and Bruins. He enjoyed working around his yard and home. He had just finished doing community service work at the Town of Burlington Marion Tavern renovation project. Al was a devoted and loving husband. He was a proud father and grandfather. Al was the beloved husband of Noreen M. (Lee) Gilbert of Burlington. He was the loving father of Robert Gilbert & his wife Faith and John Gilbert & his wife Diana all of West Chester, OH. He was the brother of Edwin Gilbert of FL, Margaret Bannon of S. Yarmouth, and Toni Reynolds of Quincy. He was the proud grandfather of Chase, Charlie, Ava, Luka, & Lydia Gilbert. He was also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn Street, BURLINGTON (exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Thursday September 10 at 11 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret’s Church, 111 Winn Street, Burlington at Noon. Visiting hours Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. Interment in Pine Haven Cemetery, Burlington. Memorials in Al’s name may be made to the Jimmy Fund, Dana Farber Cancer Institute- Jimmy Fund, 10 Brookline West, 6th floor, Brookline, MA 02445-7226.
