Obituary of Marcia Knowland

Marcia (Carter) Knowland, passed away at the Waban Health & Rehab Center in Newton, on Saturday morning, September 12, 2009. The wife of the late Warren Knowland, she was 96 years old. Marcia was born in Woburn. She was the daughter of the late Carl and Jeannette Carter. Marcia and her family lived in Woburn until she was 10 years old and then they moved to Lynnfield. Since Lynnfield did not have a high school at the time Marcia graduated from Wakefield High School. She then went on to continue her education at Boston University where she graduated with a B.A. in English and German in 1934. She worked as a Substitute Teacher at Woburn High School and the Lynnfield Elementary School. Marcia and her husband lived in Lynnfield when they were first married and then moved to Woburn in 1947 where they lived for many years. Marcia was a talented painter and many of her pictures are lovingly displayed in her family’s homes. Marcia had a passion for reading most especially biographies. She also enjoyed cooking. Marcia’s family was the center of her life. She spent many happy times over the years with her daughters, her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Marcia was blessed to have lived a life that spanned 96 years and leaves a legacy of family and love. Marcia was the beloved wife of the late Warren Knowland. Loving mother of Charlotte Carberry of Burlington and her late husband Thomas, Shirley Knowland of Wayland, and Grace Leonard & her husband James of Tewksbury. She was the grandmother of Melissa Whippen Graham & her husband Jim of Reading, Christopher Carberry & his wife Heather of Beverly, Meredith Leonard of Tewksbury, and Theresa Sheppard & her husband Bill of NH. She was the great grandmother of Benjamin Whippen, Madeline & Lucie Carberry, and Cole & Ivy Sheppard. Memorial Services will be held at the United Church of Christ Congregational, 6 Lexington St., Burlington on Wednesday Sept. 16 at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend. Interment will be private. Because of her love of flowers and birds, in lieu of flowers, memorials in Marcia’s name may be made to the Marcia C. Knowland Garden Fund, Waban Health and Rehab Center, 20 Kinmonth Rd., Waban, MA 02468.
