Obituary of Frances Hayward
Frances J. (Duncan) Hayward, former owner of Old Towne Liquor Store, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Thursday morning, July 19, 2012. The beloved wife of the late Lawrence J. Hayward, who passed away in 1966, she was 92 years old.
Frances was born in Arlington. She was the daughter of the late William and Nellie Duncan. Her family first started coming to Burlington for summer visits in 1924 and then settled here permanently. There was no high school in Burlington when Frances went to High School so she attended and graduated from Lexington High School. Frances kept in touch with her classmates for many years and got together on a regular basis through the 80’s and 90’s. Frances attended Hairdressing School at Wilfred Academy and worked as a hairdresser for over 20 years in Winchester and at Sal’s in Reading. Frances loved dancing and ran a Dancing School in the Burlington Town Hall and in Wilmington. She ran shows yearly to help raise funds to build St. Margaret’s Parish. She was a very involved Parishioner and helped run the Minstrel Shows at St. Margaret’s. Frances married Lawrence Hayward in 1948 at St. Margaret’s while he was a Lt. Col. in the Air Corps. In 1950 they built their home on Lexington St., where she lived until she passed away. Frances and Larry owned and operated Old Towne Liquors in Burlington together for many years.
When her husband Larry was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 1965 they planned a trip around the world which they made and enjoyed. Frances continued her love of travel most especially cruises. She had taken 24 cruises. Frances and her family were very close. She had a wonderful relationship with her sisters and their children. She had a very special relationship with her goddaughter and niece Joan Lloyd. Frances will be missed by all those whose lives she touched.
Frances was the beloved wife of the late Lawrence J. Hayward. She was the loving sister of Eleanor Lloyd and June Ryan both of Burlington and the late Irene Curtis, Mary Bennett and Alice Duncan. Frances was the aunt of Alice Rodriques & her late husband Roger, Walter Bennett & his wife Dorothy, Mary McGinn & her husband Paul all of Burlington, John Bennett & his wife Cheryl of FL, and the late William Neilson, Joshua Bennett & his late wife Lucy. Devoted Aunt & Godmother of Joan Lloyd of Burlington. Also survived by many great and great great nieces and nephews.
Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Monday, July 23 at 9 a .m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret’s Church at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Sunday 3-6 p.m. Interment in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Burlington. Memorials in Frances’ name may be made to St. Margaret’s Church, 111 Winn St., Burlington, MA 01803.
