Obituary of Joseph Schmidt

Joseph Schmidt, III passed away at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center on Sunday afternoon, November 15, 2009 after succumbing to a yearlong battle with heart disease. He was 69 years old. Joe was born in Mineola Long Island, New York. He was the son of the late Joseph Schmidt, Jr. and Agnes Schmidt. He grew up and was educated in Uniondale, NY. He knew the importance of a college education and earned his Associates Degree at New Hampshire Vocational Tech, his Bachelor’s Degree at Northeastern University, and his MBA at the University of Lowell. He was a member of Sigma Epsilon Rho. He worked as an engineer and marketer for Honeywell-Bull for 33 years. He really enjoyed the research portion of his job. He was part of the technology advancements which saw the early computers, the size of entire rooms to, now the size of a small chip. He had also worked in sales for Sybase Corporation. To keep himself busy in his retirement years, he worked part time at O’Connor Hardware in Billerica. Joe was always staying fit and keeping active. He played sports in High School. He played adult softball. He enjoyed running and bicycling. He always looked forward to the hunting season in the White Mountains with his sons and grandsons. Joe was a coach for the Burlington Baseball and Softball Association and the Burlington Hockey Association. He enjoyed music and playing the drums. He loved to travel and over the years he and his wife travelled all over the United States and the World, including, Australia, Italy, France, Netherlands, and Ireland. He was also happy working around his home, being a prankster with his children and grandchildren, and sharing many memorable memories with his family, neighbors, and friends. Joe was the beloved husband of Teresa M. (Gage) Schmidt. He was the loving father of Joseph Schmidt, IV & his wife Darlene of Atkinson, NH, Stephen Schmidt of Chelmsford, and Kerrin Gover & her husband John of Norwood. He was the brother of Arline Brennan & her husband Joseph of Damariscotta, ME. Loving “Pepik”(grandfather) of Caroline, LeeAnne, Joseph V, Charlie, Harry, Delaney, and Shannon. Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn Street, BURLINGTON (exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Friday, Nov. 20 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Malachy’s Church, 99 Bedford St., Burlington at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours Thursday 5-8 p.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one’s own choice.
