Obituary of Penny Newton

Frances L. (Floyd) “Penny” Newton, a resident of Burlington for 57 years, passed away at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center on Monday morning, December 7, 2009. The wife of the late Ernest D. Newton for 63 years, she was 92 years old. Penny was born in Cambridge. She lived in Wakefield, New Hampshire until she was 13 and then her family moved to Somerville. Penny was one of the founders of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Burlington which played a very important role in her life. She was the Secretary at the church from 1951 – 2006. She was a Sunday School Teacher from the age of 16 until she was 89 years old. Penny was also an Altar Guild person. She represented St. Mark’s Church on the Board of People Helping People. Penny was known throughout the town for her baking and cooking. She would bake cookies, brownies and her famous fudge for fairs, friends, grandchildren of her friends, the cemetery workers and even the local Funeral Director. Whenever you visited Penny you never left empty handed there was always treat to take home with you. Penny was an avid Boston Red Sox Fan. She was a lover of animals most especially dogs and cats. Her family was a very important part of her life and there was always one of her children, grandchildren or great grandchild visiting her home. Penny was a giving and caring woman who was blessed to live a life that spanned 92 years. She leaves a legacy of faith and family. Penny was the beloved wife of the late Ernest D. Newton. She was the loving mother of Ernest Newton & his wife Edna of Tyngsboro, Charles Newton & his wife Nancy of Hudson, NH, Ginger Blanchet & her husband Don of Burlington, Judy Luongo & her husband Robert of North Attleboro, and Linda Heigham & her husband Richard of Citra, FL. She was the sister of Thelma Vitiello of Somerville and the late Florence Monahan, Walter, John, Allan and Louise Floyd. Penny is survived by 16 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Burlington on Thursday at 1 p.m. Visiting hours will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. Interment in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, BURLINGTON. In lieu of flowers memorials in Penny’s name may be made to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 10 St. Marks Rd., Burlington, MA 01803 or People Helping People, P. O. Box 343, Burlington, MA 01803.
