Obituary of Eugene Courtney

Eugene J. “Gene” Courtney, a longtime resident of Burlington, passed away at the Winchester Hospital on December 24, 2009 The beloved husband of Louise (Carbone) he was 81 years old. Gene was born, raised and educated in Boston. He was the son of the late Vincent and Margaret Courtney. Gene was a veteran of World War II serving his country in the United States Navy. He was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal. Gene was a graduate of Northeastern University graduating with the highest honors. He worked at Boston and Maine Rail Road for a year before entering a career in Law Enforcement. He worked as a Police Officer for the City of Boston for one year. He then went on to work for the MDC for over 30 years retiring as a State Trooper. Gene worked for 15 years as a mounted police and then on the K-9 Patrol. Gene led a full and active life. He was a talented craftsman. He made furniture and basically “could make something out of nothing”. He also enjoyed painting most especially toll painting on objects. He had 2 brown belts. He had a third degree in Aikido and a second degree in Judo. Gene and his wife Louise were always together. They traveled extensively and had visited such places as England, Hawaii, California, Las Vegas, andtaken a number of cruises . They had even visited Cuba on their honeymoon. Gene will be remembered as an outgoing man with a wonderful personality and sense of humor. He will be missed by all those lives he touched. Gene was the beloved husband of Louise (Carbone). He was the loving father of John Courtney of Dayton, Ohio. Brother of the late Claire Mason. He was the loving grandfather of Robert, Ryan, Jennifer and Chase Courtney. Great grandfather of Landon Courtney. Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Monday, Dec. 28 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Malachy’s Church, 99 Bedford St., Burlington at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Sunday 2-6 p.m.. Interment in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Burlington. Memorials in Gene’s name may be made to St. Malachy, 99 Bedford St., Burlington, MA 01803.
