Obituary of Alice Modesto

Alice Belo (Lameiras) Modesto, a resident of Burlington for over 50 years, passed away at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center on Monday evening, December 28, 2009. The beloved wife of Delmar R. Modesto, was 77 years old. Alice was born, raised and educated in Gouveia, Portugal. She was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Casimira Lameiras. Alice met her husband Delmar while he was vacationing in Portugal with his friend who happened to be her brother. After a six week courtship they were married in Fatima. They came back to the United States to live and had been married 54 years. In Portugal Alice was a Pharmacist in the small town of Gouveia. When she came to the United States she had the opportunity to go to pharmacy school but she chose instead to be a wife and mother. She did work part-time with her brother at Cedar Pharmacy in Somerville as a pharmaceutical aid for 15 years. Alice maintained a close connection with her family and roots in Portugal visiting every other year. This provided her husband and sons an understanding and appreciation of her Portuguese heritage and upbringing. Alice’s life centered around her home and her family. Everyone was welcome into her home. She enjoyed cooking for her family and their friends whether it was a simple dinner or a family holiday. She also enjoyed knitting. Alice enjoyed traveling and in addition to visiting Portugal she made frequent trips to Aruba. She also enjoyed going to Foxwoods. She was blessed to have 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren whose lives she was a part of. Alice was the beloved wife of 54 years of Delmar R. Modesto. She was the loving mother of James Modesto & his wife Terri of Goffstown, NH and Anthony Modesto & his wife Mari of Billerica. She was the sister of the late Mario and Teophilo Lameiras. Grandmother of Nicholas and Leah Modesto of Goffstown, NH, Jamie Canney of Stoneham, Melissa & Melanie Modesto of Burlington, and Lynsey Pennel of SC. Great Grandmother of Tyra and Landon Modesto. Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Saturday, Jan. 2 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret’s Church, 111 Winn St., Burlington at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Friday 3-7 p.m. Interment in Pine Haven Cemetery, Burlington. Memorial’s in Alice’s name may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 85 Astor Ave., Suite 2, Norwood, MA 02062.
