Obituary of Richard Smith
Richard F. Smith, a longtime resident of Burlington, passed away at the UMass Memorial Hospital in Worcester on Monday morning, February 15, 2010. The husband of the late Agnes (Ahearn) he was 79 years old. Richard was born in Somerville. He was the son of the late Raymond and Florence Smith. He was raised and educated in Arlington and was a graduate of Arlington High School. He enlisted in the Army at the age of 18 and served for almost 4 years. Richard was a veteran of the Korean War and achieved the rank of Sergeant. While serving in Germany, he was asked to play hockey for the Army in exhibition games in Germany. He was the recipient of the Army of Occupation Medal. He went on to further his education graduating from Northeastern University with a Degree in Electrical Engineering. He also played Varsity Hockey while attending Northeastern. He never lost the passion for hockey and continued playing for many years.
Richard had a successful career as an Electrical Engineer. He worked for the Department of Defense under the jurisdiction of the Navy. He traveled extensively for the Navy. Richard specialized in ship testing electronics. He enjoyed his career and opportunities it offered him. In his leisure time, he enjoyed going out to eat, working around his home and car, and visiting friends.
Richard was the beloved husband of the late Agnes “Frankie” (Ahearn). He was the loving father of John Smith & his wife Cheryl of Worcester. He was the brother of Robert Smith of Arlington, Lawrence Smith of Westford, Arlene Lordan of Arlington, Patricia Hill of Merrimack, NH, and Regina Richardson of Eastham.
Visiting hours will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn Street, Burlington (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Wednesday, Feb. 17 from 6 – 8 p.m. & Thursday, Feb. 18 from 9 – 10 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Malachy’s Church, 99 Bedford St., Burlington on Thursday, Feb. 18 at 10:30 a.m..
