Obituary of Owen Griffin
Owen R. Griffin, who spent his retirement years on the shores of Key Largo, Florida, passed away Saturday morning, March 20 at the Baptist Hospital in Miami. He was 76 years old.
Owen was born in Jamaica Plain, the son of the late Leona and Francis Griffin. He grew up and was educated in Hyde Park. He was a graduate of Hyde Park High School in 1951 and then enlisted in the Air Force. He served 4 years active and 4 years inactive in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was an Airman Third Class and was stationed in Air Force Bases in New York, Oklahoma, Illinois, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and Greenland. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct and National Defense Service Medals.
He returned home and married his wife Louise in 1957. They lived in Dorchester and Hyde Park, before settling in Holbrook to raise their family in 1963. Owen started a small business as painting and interior decorating contractor. For 10 years the business was successful and provided the first work experiences for some of his children and nephews.
He then worked as a Building Maintenance Supervisor for St. Joseph’s Parish in Holbrook and then Quincy Point Congregational Church Homes. He enjoyed his work and the residents he assisted over the years. It was Owen’s plan to retire in Plymouth, MA, but in 1989 while on vacation in Florida, he and his wife fell in love with the Key Largo lifestyle. They purchased a home in Key Largo 3 months later and spent the last 20 years enjoying the warm weather, great fishing, boating, and the easy going way of life in the Florida Keys. Owens other interests included camping and travel. He owned a motor home and circumvented the United States several times. He cherished his family, followed his dreams, and made the most of his time on earth.
Owen was the beloved husband of 53 years of Louise Ann (Davis). He was the loving father of Cynthia Giese & her husband Leonard of MO, Richard & his wife Patricia of Burlington, MA, Kevin & his wife Elaine of Plymouth, MA, and Kathleen of Weare, NH. He was the brother of Mina Kinder of GA, the late Francis and Robert Griffin. He was the grandfather of 11, great grandfather of 2, and uncle of several nieces and nephews.
Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St.,, BURLINGTON (exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Saturday, March 27 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret’s Church, 111 Winn St., Burlington at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Friday 4-8 p.m. Interment in Pine Haven Cemetery, Burlington.
