Obituary of Thomas Canty

Thomas F. Canty, Jr. a retired Boston Gas employee passed away early Saturday morning, May 15, 2010 at the Lexington Healthcare Facility. He was 84 years old. Tom was born in Boston, the son of the late Thomas and Eleanor Canty. He grew up and was educated in Arlington. He always remembered his Arlington roots and friends. He was part on “the Greatest Generation” placing his family, community and country first. He left High School early to join the Navy to fight in WW II. He returned home and went to work at Boston Gas as a serviceman. He worked in Boston Gas’s Roslindale, Malden and Woburn branches for over his 46 years. He believed in honest work and treating his customers with respect and dignity. Tom settled in Burlington over 45 years ago and had been active in his church, St. Margaret’s, and the Burlington Knights of Columbus. He was an Usher at the 4:30 mass for 35 years. He modestly arrived early and would help prepare the Church and alter for Mass each Saturday. It was his humble way of serving his faith and church. He was an extremely active member of the Knights of Columbus. He held positions within the organization and worked on their charitable activities. He attended meetings, played cards and cribbage, and was a member of the K of C’s morning Koffee Club. Tom’s other interests included collecting movies, bowling, reading mystery novels, and vacationing in Maine. Tom was the beloved husband of the late Judith (Morganstern) Canty whom he adored. He was the father of Kevin M. Canty of Burlington. He was the grandfather of Christopher Canty and Jonathan Avila of East Boston. He was the brother of Joseph Canty & his wife Jessie of Somerville, James Canty & his wife Margaret of Las Vegas, formerly of San Diego, the late Richard Canty & his wife Lorraine, Paul Canty, and Eleanor Cahill. He was the brother-in-law of George Cahill of Arlington. He was also survived by many loving nieces & nephews and great nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Wednesday, May 19 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret’s Church 111 Winn Street, Burlington at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Tuesday 5-8 p.m. Interment in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Burlington Memorials in Tom’s name may be made to the Knights of Columbus Exceptional Children’s Fund, P.O.
