Obituary of Sheila Shannon

Sheila A. (Burns) Shannon, a longtime resident of Burlington, passed away on Friday morning, May 21, at the Wilmington Health Care Center. She was 74 years old. Born in Worcester on March 13, 1936, Sheila was the daughter of the late James and Anne Burns. After graduating from Matignon High School in Cambridge, she continued her education, graduating from Emmanuel College in Boston, where she majored in both Business and Biology. Sheila and her husband Andy settled in Burlington in 1966, where they raised their five children and became active members of the community. When her children were young, Sheila was a cafeteria worker in the Burlington school system. She later went on to work for 15 years for Lahey Clinic’s president, Dr. Robert Wise, until her retirement. In the early 1990’s, Sheila and Andy moved to Ossipee, NH. She loved her days at Lake Ossipee, where she made enjoyed many friendships, before they returned to Burlington in 2003. Sheila’s Catholic faith was a very important part of her life. She was a religious education teacher at St. Malachy’s in Burlington, and while living in Ossipee, served as a lector at St. Joseph’s Church. She was the past President of the League of Woman Voters in Burlington and also donated her time to Meals On Wheels. Sheila’s husband, her children and their families were her greatest joy. She will be missed by all those whose lives she touched. Sheila was the beloved wife of Andrew P. Shannon, with whom she would have celebratead their 52nd wedding anniversary on June 7th. She was the loving mother of James Shannon & his wife Deborah of Townsend, Andrew P. Shannon, Jr. of Burlington, Thomas Shannon & his wife Mary of Burlington, Michael Shannon of Lowell, Kathleen Weisse & her husband Duane of Burlington. She was the devoted grandmother of Angela, Laura & Brian Shannon of Townsend, Kelly & Emily Shannon and Shannon & Christian Weisse all of Burlington. Sheila is also survived by her brother, Kevin J. Burns of Clearwater, FL. Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Monday, May 24 at 10 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Malachy’s Church at 11 a.m. Visiting hours Sunday 4-8 p.m. Interment in Pine Haven Cemetery, Burlington. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Sheila’s name to St. Malachy’s Building Fund, 99 Bedford St., Burlington, MA 01803.
