Obituary of Walter Mountain

Walter H. Mountain, a retired Lieutenant in the Burlington Fire Department passed away unexpectedly on Friday morning, July 9, 2010. He was 79 years old. Walter was born in Somerville, the son of Canadian immigrants, the late Horace and Ethel Mountain. When Walter was a child, his family moved to Lexington. He graduated from Lexington High School. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He returned home and went to work with his father building homes in the Burlington and Lexington area. He learned the importance of hard work from his father and continued that belief throughout his life. He became a firefighter in Burlington and served on the Fire Department for over 25 years. He ascended to the rank of Lieutenant. Walter considered being a firefighter and serving the Burlington community an honor and privilege. To be a better provider to his family, Walter always had a side career. He was a professional house painter and wallpaperer. Walter had a number of hobbies and interests. He was a tennis player and a member of the Woburn Racket Club and the Dracut Men’s Doubles League. In nice weather, he also played on courts in Burlington and Billerica. He even had the opportunity to play and win some doubles matches with his son. He loved sports and shared his passion with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed gardening and fishing. He loved to vacation in Cape Cod. He often returned to his roots in Prince Edward Island, Canada to visit with family. He was a great Chess player. He enjoyed working around his home and pool. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his son Paul, who had special needs. Walter was the beloved husband of the late Florence May (Geoghegan) Mountain who passed away in May of this year. He was the loving father of David W. & his wife Paula of Danvers, Paul of Arlington, and Laura A. Majore & her husband Jeff of Amherst, NH. Proud Grandfather of Sarah & Andrew Mountain and Abigayle & Garrett Majore. Nephew of Louise Saunders of Nashua, NH. Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Tuesday, July 13 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St., Malachy’s Church, 99 Bedford St., Burlington at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Monday from 4-8 p.m. Interment in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Burlington.
