Obituary of Elaine McGuire
Elaine A. McGuire, the last of 11 brother and sisters, passed away at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington on Saturday morning, July 10, 2010. She was 79 years old. Elaine was born in Cambridge, the daughter of the late Edward and Della Murphy. She grew up and was educated in Cambridge. She attended St. Paul’s School and graduated from Cambridge Latin High School. She was one of 11 children growing up in the Kerry Corner section of Cambridge which was rich in Irish heritage. Tom Brokaw, referred to the residents of Kerry Corner is his book the Greatest Generation, for their ability to endure and succeed in the face of hardships and world war. The Murphy home was always filled with excitement and laughter. Elaine had an especially close bond with her sister Doris. They lived together in Milton and shared many of the same interests, like shopping.
Elaine had worked as a switchboard operator at the Harvard Business School. She then went onto to work at the Interstate Insurance Company and Colonial Investment Company. She was a member of the Red Hatters. She enjoyed spending time with her family and being a part of all her nieces and nephews activities, holidays and celebrations. She enjoyed going on vacation with her family to Aruba and other exotic destinations. In her later years, she enjoyed her home and friends at New Horizons in Woburn. She enjoyed socializing, participating in the activities, and the outings. She was a wonderful sister, aunt, and friend.
Elaine was the beloved wife of the late John G. McGuire. She was the loving sister of the late Paul, Edward, Joseph Leo, John Harold, Ruth, Mary, & Loretta Murphy, Helen Callahan, Dorothy “Doris” McGuire, and Genevieve McManus. She was a special aunt of Judith Freeman & her husband Robert of Waltham and Gregory McManus of Canton. She was an aunt of Deborah, Brian, Kelly, Michael & Paul Murphy, Jr., Stacy Naumes, and Brian Callahan. She was a special great aunt of Michael Freeman, Meghara, Nolan, and Kevin McManus. She was also survived by 10 other great nieces and nephews.
Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Tuesday, July 13 at 8 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Charles Borromeo Church, 280 Main St., Woburn at 9 a.m. Visiting hours Monday 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Interment in Milton Cemetery, Milton.
