Obituary of John Bent

John R. Bent, a resident of Burlington for 38 years, passed away at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center on Sunday, September 12, 2010, he was 77 years old. John was born, raised and educated in Somerville. He was one of 10 children born to the late Harold and Mary Ellen Bent. John was a veteran of the Korean War serving his country in the United States Navy. He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal. John went on to further his education graduating from Northeastern University. He had a successful career at Raytheon working as an engineer for the Patriot Missile. He traveled around the world and country developing and testing the missile system. John had two passions in his life – his family and golf. He was an active member of the Meadow Brook Golf Club in Reading where he made many friendships. After his retirement he would be known to golf 4-5 times a week and participate in golf tournaments on the weekends. He had taken many golf trips and played at many different courses through the years including Pebble Beach. He played in the Massachusetts State Amateur Championship as well as winning the Meadow Brook Golf Club Senior Club Championship. One of John’s proudest accomplishments was that he had 7 “Holes in One” over his golfing career. John had a very close relationship with his brothers and sisters and shared a home with his late sister Mary. He was also a “Favorite Uncle” to his 31 Nieces and Nephews and their families. He never missed a birthday or family event. John was also an avid walker and would go walking with his friends every Tuesday. John was a loving brother, uncle, great uncle and friend who will be missed. John was the beloved brother of Elizabeth Pontifex of Medford, Ralph Bent of CA, Robert F. Bent of Quincy, and the late Warren Campbell, H. Russell Bent. Jr, Eleanor James, Beverly Daly, Mary Bent, & Dorothy Griffin. He was also survived by 31 nieces & nephews and many great nieces & great nephews & friends. Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., Burlington (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Thursday, Sept. 16 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Malachy’s Church, 99 Bedford St., Burlington at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Wednesday 4-8 p.m. Interment in Pine Haven Cemetery, Burlington. Memorials in John’s name may be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute –Jimmy Fund, 10 Brookline Place West, 6th Floor, Brookline, MA 02445-7226.
